ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Lubbock Christian University is in their last road swing of the season this week, playing three final games away from Lubbock before two at home to end the season. It is a trip involving three games in three different states, as LCU took on DBU on Thursday before facing Rogers State on Saturday (in Oklahoma) and Newman on Feb. 21 (in Kansas). The Chaps have struggled on the road this season, with just two wins in eight chances.
Â
SUPER SENIORS
In all but four of this season's games, the Chaps have been led in the scoring column by two players –
Brennen Fowler and
Isaac Asrat – who are also the only two seniors on the team. Fowler has led the team in scoring 10 times after scoring 26 points on Thursday, Asrat has led nine times, and the two were co-leaders in one other game. In the four games that either Fowler or Asrat did not lead, the scoring leaders were
Rashaan Proctor (twice),
Ja'Qualyn Gilbreath and
Silas Crisler.
Â
IN GOOD HANDS
In Thursday's game against Dallas Baptist, the Chaps matched their season low for turnovers with just nine. LCU previously turned the ball over less than 10 times on three occasions – against St. Mary's on 2/7/19, against Randall on 1/4/19 and against Colorado St.-Pueblo on 11/24/18. The last time the Chaps turned the ball over fewer than nine times was on 2/17/18 against Oklahoma Christian when they turned it over just six times. This season, when committing less than 15 turnovers, LCU is 11-3.
Â
DOUBLE-DOUBLE, NO TROUBLE
Forward
Brennen Fowler recorded his 11th double-double of the season Thursday against St. Mary's (26 points, 13rebounds), but it was also the 36th of his prestigious career. His 36 career-double-doubles rank fifth above active Division II players and is tied for the 24th most among active players across all divisions. Fowler has a chance to reach fourth place in Division II, with the next player having recorded 37 in his career.
Â
RHYMIN' AND STEALIN'
Guard
Isaac Asrat took over the team lead in steals last Saturday against Texas A&M-International, gabbing four steals in the contest. He tied the single-game Heartland Conference high on Feb. 19 against UAFS when he tallied six steals. He currently ranks 11th individually in the Heartland Conference. He has 25 this season and is on pace to pass his 2017-18 season total of 36.
Â
SHARP SHOOTING
The Chaparrals have shot better than 50 percent from the field in 11 games this season, winning all but one of those contests. Thursday's lost to Dallas Baptist marked the first time this season that the Chaps made at least half their shots (50.8 percent) and took a loss. They have the second best shooting percentage in the Heartland Conference at .478. If LCU hits less than half of its shots, however, it has a losing record of just 3-6. The Chaps' best shooting game this season was on Dec. 19 when they shot 55.4 percent in a 23-point win against UT Permian Basin.
Â
DEFENDING THE DUSTDEVILS
Lubbock Christian's Saturday  game against Texas A&M-International featured its best defensive performance in a decade. The Chaps held the Dustdevils to a number of season lows, including points (36), field goals made (12) and shooting percentage (21.8 percent). LCU also forced a season-high 19 turnovers in the game, with five different players recording multiple steals, including the team leader
Isaac Asrat, who had four.
Â
FACING THE HEARTLAND
The Chaparrals are in their sixth season of Heartland Conference play after first joining for the 2013-14 campaign. They have now played a total of 105 games in conference play, making Saturday's contest against Rogers State their 106th in Heartland play. LCU is 69-37 in those six seasons giving them a .636 winning percentage overall.
Â
FIVE FACTS ABOUT ROGERS STATE
- Hillcats have lost three of their last four, with the only win coming on Feb. 9 against Oklahoma Christian
- Rogers State has allowed opponents to shoot 38.9 percent from behind the arc in conference play, which is the highest mark of any Heartland team
- Tate Turner is the only Hillcat in the top 20 scorers in the conference at 11th
- RSU has the second best free throw shooting mark in the conference at 74.8 percent
- Hillcats average just 24 defensive rebounds per game, which is the second fewest in the Heartland Conference
Â
THE SERIES WITH THE HILLCATS
Rogers State leads the all-time series since the two teams first faced off in 2008, and the Hillcats won the first eight matchups before LCU finally took a win on 2/26/11. LCU has been better as of late, however, winning three straight meetings and four of the last five. Â
