Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is coming off an 8-0 win over Lee Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala. The shutout was the first of the season for LCU, who recorded five shutouts last season. It was Taylor Franco's fourth career complete game shutout.
  • Franco was dominate in the circle, leading LCU to wins over No.9 Florida Tech and Lee University at the Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. She pitched to 33 of the 34 batters Saturday against Florida Tech (Jordan Wehr faced one batter in a sac situation and Franco re-entered) and got the win in nine innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five. Franco improved to 2-0 Sunday with a complete game shutout over Lee, as she struck out six batters in 5.0 innings. Lee was 0-for-3 getting runs across with the bases loaded and with runners on third base and less than two outs. She forced 20 (of 29) groundouts in balls put into play, and opponents to hit 3-for-22 (.136) with runners on base and 1-for-14 (.071) in two-out at-bats on the week.
  • Clarissa Martinez was vital at the plate in LCU's 3-0 week. She hit .545, with at least one hit in all three games (two multi-hit games). Six of her at-bats came with the bases empty and she was 3-for-6 in those at-bats. She was also 3-for-5 in at-bats with runners on base and 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Clarissa was 2-for-4 against No.9 Florida Tech and 3-for-3 in LCU's 8-0 win over Lee. Two of her hits on the week were doubles and she produced an RBI over Lee.
  • Angela Donaldson leads LCU with one home run and in runs-batted-in with five on the season. Her five have her tied for 10th in the conference, and her rate 1.7 per game rank her third in the conference.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic, but through their 3-0 season start, Martinez and Skylar Herrera each co-lead the team with one game-winning RBI.
  • Maxine Valdez had a good collegiate debut in LCU's extra-inning win over No.24 Valdosta State. The freshman went 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing one hit en route to garnering her first win of the season (1-0). Her 0.33 WHIP leads the LSC and is sixth nationally. She also leads the LSC and is ninth nationally in hits allowed per seven innings (2.3).

  • In the circle, LCU ranks second in the LSC in ERA (1.27), which is 16th nationally. The Lady Chaps lead the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (14) and rank sixth in WHIP (0.77).

  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 401-122 (76.7%).
  • His 400th win was recorded last Saturday, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
