LCU Facing OBU For First Time Since 2013 Before Facing UNK For First Time

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 8, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps continue their play in the Lubbock Sports College Invitational Saturday with home contests against Oklahoma Baptist (2:30 p.m.) and Nebraska – Kearney (4:45 p.m.) at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU and OBU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over OBU, 20-4.
  • This meeting will mark the first ever meeting between the two programs since they each were Sooner Athletic Conference members in the NAIA.
  • The prior meeting resulted in a 6-4 LCU win on May 3, 2013 at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Oklahoma City.
  • LCU is 6-0 all-time against OBU in Lubbock. The previous meeting in Lubbock was Apr. 25, 2009.

  • The two teams have never faced each other.
  • UNK is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), and LCU is 1-0 all-time against MIAA programs (1-0 verses Emporia State).
 
Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is off to a 5-0 start on the season, which is their best start since a 7-0 start in 2017.
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 3-0 to open the season and has a 0.38 ERA (second in the LSC) over 18.2 innings pitched. She has 17 strikeouts (seventh in the conference) and no walks on the season. She is tied for third in the LSC in strikeouts looking with seven.
  • LCU had four home runs Friday, giving them five on the season, which is tied for third most among LSC programs. Angela Donaldson leads LCU with two home runs.
  • Along with leading the team in dingers, Donaldson leads LCU in runs-batted-in with nine on the season. Her nine have her tied for sixth in the conference.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic, but through their 3-0 season start, Clarissa Martinez, Savannah Wysocki, Angela Donaldson and Skylar Herrera each co-lead the team with one game-winning RBI.
  • Jordan Wehr collected her first win of the season in the circle Friday and it was her 14th career win (actively leads LCU, with Franco holding 13 career wins). Wehr was the third LCU pitcher to claim a win this season, as Franco (3) and Maxine Valdez (1) each have a win registered.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 5-0 this season and two of the wins have come in extra innings and against nationally ranked programs (both were the opening wins of the season in Gulf Shores, Ala.).
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .299 as a team, with five home run and 13 27 RBI in five games. LCU averages 6.8 runs a contest.
  • In the circle, LCU ranks second in the LSC in ERA (1.03), which entered the week 16th nationally. The Lady Chaps lead the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12) and rank sixth in WHIP (0.79).
 
Doubleheaders
  • LCU went 23-13 last season in games part of a doubleheader. They split 10 of 12 of their conference doubleheaders (12-12 in conference doubleheaders and 11-1 in non-conference doubleheaders).
  • The Lady Chaps are is 4-0 this season in doubleheaders.
 
Home Sweet Home
  • LCU is 245-29 (89.4%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • The Lady Chaps are 2-0 at home this season. Last season, LCU was 18-8 at home last season.
 
Home Openers
  • LCU improved to 13-0 all-time in home openers at PlainsCapital Park after their win over UCCS Friday.
  • With the 10-0 Friday win over UCCS, seven of LCU's home openers have resulted in shutout victories.
 
Invitational Notes
  • LCU is 2-0 on the weekend.
  • The squad is hitting .356 and have 16 hits (eight are for extra bases) in the invitational.
  • Savannah Wyasocki is 4-for-5 in the weekend tournament with two doubles and five stolen bases.
  • Skylar Herrera has four RBI in the invitational.
 
Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 403-122 (76.8%).
  • His 400th win was recorded last Saturday, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Looking at OBU
  • The Bison are coming off a 17-39 season and they went 11-32 in the Great America Conference.
  • OBU is 2-5 on the season, winning their first two games of the season Friday. They went 0-5 in Las Vegas, Nev. last week. They revenged it against a team from Las Vegas, N.M. Friday, going nine innings in an 11-10 win over New Mexico Highlands in a contest that went over four hours.
  • The Bison open Saturday facing Chadron State before meeting LCU.
  • The GAC Preseason Polls have UCCS selected No.11 (out of 12).
 
Looking at UNK
  • The Lopers are coming off a 20-24 season and they went 12-14 in the MIAA.
  • This season is UNK's first under head coach Katie Ackermann, who joined UNK from McCook Community College.
  • Friday served as the season opener for UNK, who opened the season 2-0 with wins over Eastern New Mexico and Texas – Permian Basin.
  • The MIAA Preseason Polls have UNK selected No.11 (out of 14).
