LCU Hosting StMU To Complete Opening Home-Week of LSC Play

Lady Chaps Attempts To Improve 11-1 Home Record

LCU and StMU Series Snapshot 
  • StMU leads the all-time series over LCU, 20-14.
  • LCU is 7-4 all-time against StMU in Lubbock, winning two out of three meetings last season (LCU has won four of the last five against the Rattlers at home).
  • The two teams split a season series last season, with each team going 3-3 in head-to-head meetings.
    • LCU split the series despite being held to a .219 average in the series (StMU hit .294).
    • Lindzi Clemmer and K'leigh Arredondo co-led LCU in the series with seven hits each. Clemmer joined KK Lopez-Liu to co-lead the series in RBI (3).
    • StMU's Alex McLennan went 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA against LCU.
    • Alex Moreno produced five RBI in the series for StMU, going 7-for-18 (.389) at the plate. They also had nine hits from Raynelle Nash and eight from Abigale Carney, who hit .421 in the series.
    • LCU pitchers Taylor Franco and Jordan Wehr each went 1-1 against StMU last season. Franco made three appearances (all starts) and Wehr appeared in five of the six games of the series (four relief outings). LCU did not have a complete game in any of the six games.

Opening Thoughts
  • LCU is 18-6 on the season. They opened the season 9-0, which marked their best start since a 23-0 start in 2012 (best start since going Division II).
  • Pitcher Taylor Franco is 9-3 on the season (third in the conference in wins) and has a 1.73 ERA (sixth in the LSC) over 76.2 innings pitched (fourth in the LSC). She has 62 strikeouts (seventh in the conference, second in the conference with 26 strikeouts looking) and 12 walks on the season (first walk allowed this season came in the 24th inning of her innings pitched). Franco enters the week leading the LSC and ranks 37th nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.45. She also enters the week averaging 1.09 walks per seven innings (second in LSC and 58th nationally) and a WHIP of 0.93 (second in the LSC and 35th nationally).
  • LCU ranks tied for fifth in the LSC with 19 home runs on the season. Angela Donaldson, Skylar Herrera, Savannah Wysocki and Addi Lewis each have three on the season to co-lead the team (tied for 19th in the LSC).
  • Donaldson leads the team in RBI with 18, which is 21st in the conference. Half (nine) of her RBI have come with two-outs.
  • The statistic of "game-winning RBI" is not an official statistic (the RBI that gives a club the lead it never relinquishes), but through their 18-6 season start, seven different Lady Chaps have a game-winning RBI. Skylar Herrera and Clarissa Martinez co-lead the team with four. Angela Donaldson has two, while Addi Lewis, Brooke MakemsonSavannah Wysocki and Athena Muniz each have one (four have been via errors or non-credited situations, which players do not get credit for).
  • Athena Muniz leads LCU with a .383 average on the season (18-for-47), which is 20th in the conference.
  • Savannah Wysocki and Skylar Herrera co-lead LCU in hits (25).(tied for 18th in the conference). Wysocki is batting .313 (25-for-80), with six doubles (tied for 15th in the LSC and leads team) and three triples (tied for second the LSC in triples and tied for seventh nationally). She also has three home runs (had one last season) for a .575 slugging mark, which leads the squad.

How is the Team Doing? 
  • LCU is 18-6 this season and are 4-0 against nationally ranked teams. They made the jump this week from No.22 to No.20 in the NFCA Top-25 Poll this week, for a second consecutive appearance in the polls. The entry last week into the Top-25 marked the first time they have been ranked since making the move to NCAA Division II (2014 season).
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .277 as a team, with 19 home run and 110 RBI in 22 games. LCU averages 5.7 runs a contest (fifth in the LSC).
  • LCU enters the weekend ranking 30th nationally in stolen bases per game (2.1) and 14th in total stolen bases (46). Skylar Herrera ranks fourth in the conference with 18 stolen bases and Savannah Wysocki is sixth in the LSC with 15 steals.
  • In the circle, LCU is second in the LSC in ERA (2.13), ranking 30th nationally. The Lady Chaps enter the weekend 17th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.34) and ranking 10th in WHIP (0.99). LCU has six shutouts this season, which is tied for 11th nationally (second in the LSC).

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering Friday with a softball record of 416-128 (76.5%).
  • His 400th win was recorded Feb.1, as he became the 53rd active NCAA Division II softball head coach to reach 400 career wins and he is the only active coach to do it in less than 11 seasons.
  • Along with surpassing 300 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

Looking at StMU
  • The Hilltoppers are coming off a 30-25 mark last season and they went 19-11 in the Heartland Conference. They hosted the conference tournament, but were eliminated, with one of their losses occurring to LCU.
  • They are 11-16 this season, including a 3-3 conference start after suffering a sweep in a doubleheader Friday at Angelo State. ASU also defeated the Rattlers Saturday in a non-conference game.
  • Jayme Johns leads StMU with a .435 average and 40 hits on the season.
  • Abigale Carney leads StMU with four home runs and 18 RBI.
  • StMU pitching has surrendered 18 home runs this season.
