TIPOFF
After playing four straight games at home, the Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team is back out on the road for a west division matchup with Midwestern State. The Chaps took down the Mustangs earlier this week, using a strong second half to win the matchup at the Rip Griffin Center.
Â
FIVE THINGS TO FOCUS ON
Â
1 | With a win Saturday, the Chaparrals could move to 10-0 for just the second time in program history, matching the 1996-97 team's 10-0 start. It is already the best start for LCU under head coach
Todd Duncan and the best start since moving to the NCAA. Only 15 other teams in Division II are still undefeated, but ten of those teams have played less than five games.
Â
2 | The Mustangs won their first five games of the season and seven of their first eight, with the only loss coming in overtime against then-No. 9 St. Edward's. More recently though, MSU has lost four straight games, including loss to previously winless in LSC play UT Tyler, two one-point losses to No. 15 DBU and the loss on Wednesday to LCU.
Â
3 | Lubbock Christian has the fifth-best scoring and ninth-best field-goal percentage defense in all of NCAA Division II entering the weekend. The have allowed just 60.7 points per game so far this year and held opponents to 39.2 percent shooting. On Wednesday, the Chaps held the Mustangs to just 60 points, which was their lowest total of the year, and 39.3 percent shooting, which was their third-lowest mark this season.
Â
4 | On the flip side, the Chaparrals themselves have shot 51.6 percent from the field this season, which ranks No. 8 nationally. They rank second in the LSC, thanks to DBU's .532 shooting percentage, but LCU has also been efficient in its passing, ranking No. 2 nationally with an assist/turnover ratio of 1.79.
Â
5 | Senior forward
Parker Hicks enters the weekend as Lubbock Christian's leading scorer, averaging 16.9 points per game. In Wednesday's matchup between the two teams, he scored 24 points.
Lloyd Daniels (14.1) and
Rowan Mackenzie (12.7) are the only other two Chaps currently averaging double-figures.
Â
THE SERIES WITH THE MUSTANGS
Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State have met a total of 37 times on the hardwood, dating back to the days of the Texoma Conference in 1972. The Mustangs have had the upper hand overall, leading the all-time series 25-12, but the Chaps have been on top recently, winning the last five meetings. LCU won at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season, using a late bucket from
Rashaan Proctor to steal a 73-72 win. The Chaps also got what is likely the biggest win in program history in the coliseum, taking down No. 1 seed and host Midwestern State 79-73 in overtime at the 2016 NCAA South Central Regional.
