LCU Track & Field to Compete at LSC Championships

Chaps, Lady Chaps Competing with Full Team for First Time

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 19, 2020) – Lubbock Christian University's men's and women's track teams will compete this Saturday and Sunday at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, which are being hosted at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Nine teams will be participating in the meet on the men's side with 10 on the women's side. In the championships meet regardless of the number of teams, official team scores shall be kept and recorded as follows: (8 scoring) Individual Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, Relay Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

This will be the first year for both the Chaps and Lady Chaps to compete with full teams, with the construction of the LCU Soccer & Track Complex last year allowing head coach Nick Cordes to expand both rosters.

Due to capacity limitations, tickets for the event will not be available to the general public.

Lubbock Christian's top performer heading into the championships comes on the men's side in Keitron Boyd. The Abilene native competes in the sprints for the Chaps and is currently the conference leader in the 400-meter with a time of 48.91s. He has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Championships and ranks third in the 200-meter with a time of 21.48s.

Bryce Spencer enters the weekend ranked third in the league in the weight throw, which will take place on Saturday. His throw of 16.96m at the Corky Classic is less than a meter of the provisional qualifying mark of 17.84m.

Two jumpers – Mitch Stutler and Kevin Washington – enter the meet with some success as well. Stutler is currently ranked sixth in the league in the long jump with a distance of 6.63m, while Washington is sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.91m.

The Chaps will send a number of other competitors in both long distance and sprints/hurdles events.

On the women's side, Kristen Hughes leads the way with the third-best long jump mark in the league. She recorded her mark at the Washburn Open with a distance of 5.34m, which is just barely short of the NCAA D-II provisional mark.

The Lady Chaps have also found success this season in the 400-meter, where they have two athletes ranked in the top 10 in the LSC. Jaliyah Jackson currently has the fifth-best league mark in that event with a time of 59.84s. Anna Salisbury ranks ninth with a time of 1:00.96.

Competition on Friday begins with the heptathlon and pentathlon in the morning before field and running events begin in the afternoon.
