Lady Chaps Host Hilltoppers in LSC Action

LCU Has Not Allowed a Goal in Last Two Games

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (3-2, 1-1) vs.
ST. EDWARD'S (1-3, 1-1)
Wednesday, March 17 – 2 p.m.
LCU Soccer & Track Complex – Lubbock, Texas

LADY CHAP HEADERS
  • Lubbock Christian is riding a two-match win streak after beating McMurry and UT Permian Basin on the road in the last week, shutting out both opponents
  • Wednesday's game is the third home game of the season for the Lady Chaps, who are 1-1 in games played at their brand new facility so far this spring
  • Of the eight goals scored by Lubbock Christian so far this season, six have come from different individuals, including two from newcomers to the 2020-21 roster
  • LCU goalkeeper Hannah Wise posted her second shutout of the year this past Wednesday against UT Permian Basin, making one save in the win, which gives her 16 this year
  • St. Edward's has scored three goals so far this season, but all of them came in one game against TAMIU on March 3. They have been shut out three times

SHUTOUT CENTRAL
It has been 194 minutes and 19 seconds since Lubbock Christian last allowed a goal, and they have shut out their last two opponents 3-0 and 2-0. Overall, LCU has allowed just one goal in their last 270 minutes on the field, posting a goals against average of 1.00 through five games, which is tied for the third-best mark in the Lone Star Conference. The Lady Chap defense has limited opponents to just 41 shots this season, 21 of which have been on goal. Goalkeeper Hannah Wise has made 16 saves for a save percentage of .762.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL
The Lady Chaps have scored the first goal of the game four times this season, going 3-1 in those contests. The only game they have lost win scoring first was the Feb. 27 contest against Angelo State, which was also the only game they have allowed multiple goals in. Allison Scott has netted the first goal of the game twice this year (2/24 and 3/10 both vs. UTPB), and Celia Duarte has also scored first twice (2/27 vs. ASU, 3/7 vs. McM). During the 2019 season, Lubbock Christian was 13-1 in games where they scored first.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER
LCU is averaging 1.60 goals per game so far this season, which ranks in the top half of the conference. They have reached this mark not with dominance by one player, but with a balanced offensive attack. Six different players have combined for the eight goals so far this year, with only Scott and Duarte scoring twice. Makenna Pate, Stephanie McClung, Faith Webber and Lindsey Elison have all also found the back of the net. Maddie Hoel also has a pair of points to her name this season, having assisted on two LCU scores. Overall, Lubbock Christian has taken 52 shots (sixth in the LSC), with 26 of those on target.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSE
The Lady Chaps have a wealth of experience in goal for them this season in keeper Hannah Wise. The Midlothian native and Preseason LSC Goalkeeper of the Year has been a four-year starter for the Lady Chaps, seeing action in 60 games across her career. She already has the program record for saves with 182, 105of which have come this season. In her career (5398 minutes), she has allowed an average of .97 per game while posting a save percentage of .758.

NEW HOME, WHO DIS
Wednesday's matchup will be the third game for LCU on their home field, where they are 1-1 this season. The complex, which was completed last year, features a turf playing surface with an eight-lane track around the perimeter, lights for night games and stadium seating for up to 500 fans. The Lady Chaps have historically been excellent at home under head coach Alex Denning never posting a losing record on their own field in his tenure. In 2019, LCU went 8-1-1 in home games, scoring 18 goals while allowing just five from their opponents. Scott scored a team-leading six goals in last seasons' 10 home games and she scored in this year's home-opener as well.

IN THE STANDS
Admission for Wednesday's game is free, but there will be guidelines in place to combat the spread of COVID-19. Masks will be required for all attendees, with seating every other row and at least two seats or six feet in between families in the stands in compliance with university mandates.

SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
  • Although St. Edward's has attempted the fifth-most shots in the Lone Star Conference this season with 56, they have scored just three times on the year
  • Two of those three goals have come from one player – Katie Gay – who is in her first season of collegiate soccer
  • Meghan Dunning has played every minute in goal for St. Edward's, making 12 saves but allowing six goals. Her goals against average of 1.50 ranks seventh in the LSC
  • Nick Cowell has been at the helm of the St. Edward's women's soccer program for 15 seasons and has a 212-50-27 all-time record with the team
  • Sarah Preston has eight shots and a team-leading four shots on goal this year, but she has yet to score. The junior does have one point with an assist in the 3/3 game against TAMIU

THE SERIES WITH THE HILLTOPPERS
Lubbock Christian has faced off with St. Edward's 12 times in women's soccer but does not have a win against them yet. Last season, the two teams fought to a 1-1 draw in the regular season (second tie in the all-time series) and St. Edward's got a win when the teams met in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
