LUBBOCK, Texas (May 6, 2021) – The Lubbock Christian University track & field teams will be in competition at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the WTAMU Track & Field Complex in Canyon, Texas this weekend.
Â
Both the Chaps and Lady Chaps will compete at the event, which is being hosted over three days by West Texas A&M. Multis will begin on Thursday, with other events competing on Friday and Saturday.
Â
On the men's side, LCU has several top-ranked performers heading into the meet, including  three athletes already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships later this month.
Â
Samuel Wing leads the way, ranking first in the LSC with his season-best 400-meter hurdle time of provisionally qualifying time of 52.71s, which he set at the Texas Tech Open in April. Wing also has the league's 16
th-best time in the 110m hurdles at 15.34s.
Â
Mitch Stutler is nationally qualified in the long jump with his season-best jump of 7.37m at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight. Also on the field side,
Bryce Spencer has a provisionally qualifying discus throw of 51.56m, which he set at the Masked Rider Open. Spencer's toss is the fifth-best in the LSC. Spencer also has the sixth-best hammer throw mark in the LSC (54.91), but it is about a meter short of qualifying him for the NCAA Championships.
Â
Other top performers on the men's side are
Keitron Boyd,
Kevin Modesto Delima and
Haven Hernandez. Boyd is just five one-hundredths of a second shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 200-meter, where his time of 21.37s is the third-best in the conference.
Â
Boyd also has the 10
th-best 400-meter time in the LSC at 49.43. Modesto is slightly ahead of him in that event though, posting a time of 49.34s at the Wes Kittley Invitational. Hernandez has the eighth-best conference time in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 55.10.
Â
For the Lady Chaps, no athletes are currently qualified for the NCAA Championships, but they still have a number of strong marks.
Â
Anna Salisbury is the highest-ranked LCU female competitor in the conference heading into the meet, currently holding the fourth-best time in the 400-meter. Her mark of 56.57 was set just last week at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
Â
Marissa Perez,
Dulceamor Guajardo and
Madelyn Merrell have all also had impressive spring performances. Perez heads into this weekend's meet with the ninth-best LSC time in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Â
Merrell is a middle distance runner and comes in with the 15
th-best time in the LSC in both the 800-meter (2:21.68) and the 1500-meter (4:50.80). Guajardo competes in the throwing events and currently holds the 10
th-best conference mark in the shot put (12.36m) as well as the 20
th-best throw in the discus (33.93m).
Â
Track events (including the steeplechase) will be streamed on both Friday and Saturday, and live results will be available throughout the meet.
