Softball Home Opener Has Old Sooner Foe In Town

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 10, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University hosts the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic this weekend at three separate softball fields in Lubbock, and the event gets underway with one contest scheduled for Thursday evening. That "one" contest doubles as LCU's home opener, with LCU hosting Oklahoma Baptist with a 5 p.m. first pitch at PlainsCapital Park on the LCU campus.

LCU and OBU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over OBU, 21-4.
  • This meeting will mark the second-ever meeting between the two programs since they each were Sooner Athletic Conference members in the NAIA.
  • The prior meeting resulted in a 10-2 LCU win in five innings on Feb. 8, 2020 (at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational at PlainsCapital Park). Prior to that, the two teams had not met since May 3, 2013 at the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament in Oklahoma City.
  • LCU is 7-0 all-time against OBU in Lubbock. Prior to the previous meeting, OBU had not been to since Mar. 1, 2012.

Tourney Takes
  • LCU has five games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (two against Great America Conference and Rocky Mountain Conference and one against a representative of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association).
  • LCU will face Nebraska-Kearney (2 p.m.) and Chadron State (4 p.m.) Friday.
  • Saturday's games include a 2 p.m. scheduled first-pitch against Fort Lewis College, followed by a 4 p.m. contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 2-2 this season and all four prior games were played last weekend in Gulf shores, Ala. At the Gulf Shores Invitational.
  • They are coming off a pair of wins Saturday, as they defeated Montevallo 6-1 and West Georgia 12-2 in five innings.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .319 as a team (37th nationally), with two home runs and 19 RBI in four games. LCU averages 6.5 runs a contest (35th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 2.59 (44th nationally). Opponents are hitting .216 against LCU this season.
  • LCU is ninth nationally in stolen bases per game (3.0) and 19th in doubles per game (2.25).
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 1-1 this season with a 1.50 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched. She ranks sixth in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (4.5).
  • Taylor Franco is 1-0 with a 2.21 ERA. She ranks 13th in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 2.02. She is 36-19 in her career, which has her tied for 18th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins.
  • Savannah Wysocki had a triple Sunday against West Georgia, placing her with her first of the season and 16 in her LCU career, which actively leads all of NCAA in career triples. Wysocki, with two stolen bases this season, has 72 in her career, ranking 10th among active career NCAA Division II leaders.
  • Tiarra Delrosario leads LCU in hitting (.600) and co-leads the team in hits (6), joining Kasey Flores and Tyla Lee. Delrosario's hitting mark ranks second in the LSC and 32nd nationally.
  • Kasey Flores leads the LSC (Delrosario is second) in on-base percentage (.667), which is 24th nationally. She ranks 11th nationally in doubles (3) and co-leads the team (with Skylar Herrera in home runs (1). Flores, a transfer from UTEP, sits 22nd actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 24.
  • Skylar Herrera ranks tied for 13th nationally with four stolen bases on the season. She has 45 in her career, ranking 32nd actively among NCAA Division II career leaders.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 449-147.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Home Sweet Home
  • LCU is 273-37 (88.1%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 17-7 at home (13-1 in 2020).

Home Openers
  • LCU is 14-0 all-time in home openers at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Eight of LCU's home openers have resulted in shutout victories (LCU Washburn 7-0 in last season's home opener).

Looking at OBU
  • The Bison went 21-20 last season, finishing seventh in the GSC with a 16-17 conference mark. They are 3-1 this season, riding a three-game win streak from wins in the Hawkins-McGhee Tournament in Arkadelphia, Ark. Their lone loss was to LSC member Cameron.
  • OBU ranks 37th nationally in ERA (second in the GAC) with a mark of 2.42.
  • Oklahoma Baptist is slated to finish sixth in the 12-team GSC Preseason Poll.
  • Pitcher Kayleigh Jones has 12.1 strikeouts per seven innings, which ranks sixth nationally.
