LUBBOCK, Texas (February 11, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University, coming off their no-hit victory Thursday in their home opener, continues their five-game homestand in the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic Friday facing a pair of Nebraska based programs. It starts off at 2 p.m., with LCU hosting Nebraska-Kearney and follows with the Lady Chaps hosting Chadron State College afterwards.

LCU and UNK Series Snapshot
  • LCU and the Lopers are meeting for the third time all-time, with LCU holding a 2-0 series lead.
  • The two teams met the past two seasons at LCU's annual tournament, with last season's contest resulting in a 10-2 win in five innings.  
  • Athena Muniz and Brooke Makemson each went 2-for-2 and had a home run last season in the matchup in Lubbock. Muniz also had a triple. Rachel Kuehnle started in the circle and gained her first collegiate win.
 
LCU and CSC Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over Chadron, Nebraska based Chadron State College, 4-0.
  • The first three meetings were in Lubbock (3-0), with the previous meeting played in Oklahoma City, Okla. (at OC) and won 10-6 by LCU on Feb. 14, 2020.
  • The two teams first met in 2018 and continued to play in 2019 and a pair of meetings in 2020. All meetings in Lubbock have been part of the annual multi-field tournament Lubbock hosts.

Tourney Takes
  • LCU has five games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (two against Great America Conference and Rocky Mountain Conference and one against a representative of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association).
  • LCU opened play Thursday night with an 8-0 no-hit win over Oklahoma Baptist. LCU had three home runs in the game and seven of their nine hits were for extra bases. Taylor Franco pitched the 19th no-hitter in program history and her second of her LCU career.
  • Saturday's games include a 2 p.m. scheduled first-pitch against Fort Lewis College, followed by a 4 p.m. contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 3-2 this season. Their opening four games of the season were the past weekend in Gulf shores, Ala. at the Gulf Shores Invitational.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .336 as a team (29th nationally), with five home runs (13th nationally in home runs per game, 1.00) and 12 double (2.4 per game ranks 20th nationally) in five games. LCU averages 6.8 runs a contest (33rd nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 2.19 (30th nationally). Opponents are hitting .190 against LCU this season.
  • LCU is 21st nationally in stolen bases per game (2.4) 37th in fielding percentage (.973).
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 1-1 this season with a 1.50 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched. She ranks eighth in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (4.5).
  • Taylor Franco is 2-0 with a 1.58 ERA on the young season. She ranks 13th in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 1.99. She is 37-19 in her career, which has her tied for 17th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins.
  • Savannah Wysocki had a triple Thursday against Oklahoma Baptist, placing her with her second of the season and 17 in her LCU career, which actively leads all of NCAA in career triples. Wysocki, with two stolen bases this season, has 72 in her career, ranking 10th among active career NCAA Division II leaders.
  • Kasey Flores leads LCU in hitting (.500) and co-leads the team in hits (7), joining Tyla Lee (12th in the LSC).
  • Kasey Flores ranks fourth in the LSC in on-base percentage (.611), which is 57th nationally. She ranks 14th nationally in doubles (3) and 11th in home runs (2). Flores, a transfer from UTEP, sits 21st actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 25.
  • Skylar Herrera ranks tied for 13th nationally with four stolen bases on the season. She has 45 in her career, ranking 33rd actively among NCAA Division II career leaders.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 450-147.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

  • LCU is 274-37 (88.1%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 17-7 at home (13-1 in 2020).

Looking at UNK
  • The Lopers went 17-25 last season, finishing 12th in the MIAA with a 8-18 conference mark. They open the season facing Colorado School of Mines before facing LCU Friday.
  • UNK does not play at home until Mar. 26, which their MIAA opener. That has UNK playing their first 27 games away from home.
  • Third-year head coach Katie Ackermann has a veteran team, as the top nine hitters off last year's squad return. In the circle, three must be replaced but three return and they combined for 153 innings in 2021. A 12-player newcomer class features one transfer and 11 freshmen.
  • UNK is preseason picked 12th in the MIAA Preseason Poll
 
Looking at CSC
  • The Eagles went 13-27 last season, finishing ninth in the RMAC with a 13-27 conference mark. They open the season facing West Texas A&M Friday morning before facing LCU.
  • CSC does not play at home until Mar. 5, in RMAC play, as they play their first 14 games away from home.
  • Chadron has 13 returners and 14 newcomers on their roster.
  • The Eagles entered the season preseason picked ninth in the RMAC Preseason Poll.
