LUBBOCK, Texas (February 12, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University concludes their play Saturday in the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic with a pair of games, facing Fort Lewis College at 2 p.m. and Northwestern Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park on the LCU campus.

LCU and FLC Series Snapshot
  • LCU and the Skyhawks are meeting for the sixth time all-time (LCU owns a 5-0 record in the series).
  • All five prior meetings have been in neutral site games, with a trio of meetings played in Canyon, Texas.
  • The first-ever meeting head-to-head was Feb. 15 in Las Vegas, Nev., where LCU won 7-2.
  • LCU, who has never faced FLC in Lubbock, has scored at least seven runs in all five meetings and averages 8.4 runs per game in the all-time series.

  • LCU leads the all-time series over Northwestern Oklahoma State 19-1, as the teams are meeting for the 21st time all-time.
  • The two teams have not met since a 3-0 LCU win in Grand Prairie, Texas on Feb. 11, 2017.
  • The Lady Chaps have won the prior 15 meetings, with the last NWOSU win garnered Mar. 19, 2009 in Alva. Okla.

Tourney Takes
  • LCU has five games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (two against Great America Conference and Rocky Mountain Conference and one against a representative of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association).
  • LCU opened play Thursday night with an 8-0 no-hit win over Oklahoma Baptist. LCU had three home runs in the game and seven of their nine hits were for extra bases. Taylor Franco pitched the 19th no-hitter in program history and her second of her LCU career.
  • Saturday's, LCU defeated a pair of Nebraska programs (Nebraska Kearney and Chadron State) 6-1 in each game.
  • Savannah Wysocki is 5-for-8 (.625) in the tournament, with a .727 on-base percentage. She has a 1.375 slugging mark with two doubles and two triples.
  • Brooke Makemson, Angela Donaldson and Skylar Herrera each co-lead LCU with three RBI in the tournament.
  • LCU starting pitchers Taylor Franco and Maxine Valdez have combined to allow four hits in 17.0 innings during the tournament.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 5-2 this season. Their opening four games of the season were last weekend in Gulf shores, Ala. at the Gulf Shores Invitational.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .321 as a team (29th nationally), with six home runs (13th nationally in home runs per game, 0.86) and 13 doubles (1.9 per game ranks 20th nationally) in seven games. LCU averages 6.6 runs a contest (33rd nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 1.83 (30th nationally). Opponents are hitting .173 against LCU this season (leads the LSC).
  • LCU is 21st nationally in stolen bases per game (4.0) and 37th in fielding percentage (.976).
 
Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 2-1 this season with a 1.37 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. She ranks eighth in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (3.7).
  • Taylor Franco is 3-0 with a 1.18 ERA on the young season. She ranks 13th in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 1.99. She is 38-19 in her career, which has her 17th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins. The 38 wins matches Marissa Gonzalez for third all-time in LCU program history in career wins.
  • Savannah Wysocki has had two triples on the homestand, placing her with three of the season and 18 in her LCU career, which actively leads all of NCAA in career triples. Wysocki, with five stolen bases this season, has 75 in her career, ranking 10th among active career NCAA Division II leaders.
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU, hitting .455 with 10 hits and six RBI. Her 10 hits is tied for ninth in the LSC.
  • Kasey Flores ranks 14th nationally in doubles (3) and 11th in home runs (2). Flores, a transfer from UTEP, sits 21st actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 25.
  • Skylar Herrera ranks tied for 13th nationally with six stolen bases on the season. She has 47 in her career, ranking 33rd actively among NCAA Division II career leaders.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 452-147.
  • Along with surpassing 400 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 300 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.

  • LCU is 276-37 (88.2%) all-time in home games at PlainsCapital Park.
  • Last season, LCU was 17-7 at home (13-1 in 2020).
  • This season, LCU is 3-0 at home.

Looking at FLC
  • The Skyhawks went 20-23 last season, finishing sixth in the RMAC with a 19-17 conference mark. They are off to an 0-2 start on the season, falling 7-0 to Eastern New Mexico and 4-0 to West Texas A&M Friday in Lubbock.
  • FLC was held to three hits on their opening day of play Friday.
  • The 'hawks are in their first season with former Otero JC head coach Dwight Sanders at the helm.
  • FLC is preseason picked ninth in the MIAA Preseason Poll.
 
Looking at NWOSU
  • The Rangers went 8-31 last season, finishing 12th (last) in the Great America Conference with a 3-30 conference mark. They opened the season 1-1 with a 1-0 win over Colorado Christian and a 10-6 loss against Eastern New Mexico in Lubbock. They face Colorado School of Mines prior to facing LCU Saturday.
  • Ryan Wondrasek, who previously coached at Seward County, takes over for his first season with the Rangers.
  • The Rangers had a 6-1 advantage in extra-base hits Friday. Abby DeTar leads NWOSU with a .429 average (3-for-7).
  • The Rangers entered the season preseason picked 12th in the GAC Preseason Poll.
