LCU Will Open Regional Festival in Oklahoma With Southern Hospitality

BETHANY, Okla. (February 18, 2022) – There is a Regional Festival of Division II softball games over a multi-week period hosted by several universities in the Oklahoma City metro area, and Lubbock Christian University takes part in the festivity of games this weekend, beginning with a pair of games hosted at Southern Nazarene Friday. The Lady Chaps open with their first road game of the season, and their only road game of the weekend, facing Southern Nazarene at 12:15 p.m. and followed with a neutral site game against Southern Arkansas.

LCU and SNU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over SNU, 13-1 and LCU has won the last three meetings.
  • The two former conference foes from the Sooner Athletic Conference (NAIA), have met twice since moving to NCAA Division II.
    • 2018 with LCU defeating SNU 11-1 on Feb. 18, 2018 at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Ariz, which was part of the Tucson Invitational Games.
    • 2019, as LCU walked it off with a zany 21-20 victory in Lubbock on Feb. 1, 2019. It was an LCU record for combined runs and the game was decided by LCU scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to follow a four-spot posted by SNU in the top of the inning.
  • Surprisingly, the two teams have only played twice all-time in Bethany, which came during the inaugural 2008 season of the LCU program. LCU is 2-0 in Bethany after a 12-0 and 7-6 win on Mar. 29, 2008.

  • LCU leads the all-time series over Southern Arkansas 1-0.
  • The lone meeting was Feb. 11, 2017 in Grand Prairie, Texas, which resulted in a 13-12 extra-inning (10 innings) win by LCU (Roxy Curiel walk-off single).
  • The Lady Chaps are 3-0 all-time against Arkansas based programs.

Tourney Takes
  • LCU has five games scheduled for the weekend, facing teams representing three separate conferences (four against Great America Conference programs and one against a representative of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association).
  • The Lady Chaps continue Saturday in Edmond, Okla. at Central Oklahoma, where they will face Missouri Southern and Arkansas Tech.
  • Sunday morning, LCU closes their Sooner State stay facing No.14 Rogers State in Oklahoma City at Oklahoma Christian.

  • LCU is 7-2 this season. They are coming off five wins at home during the Visit Lubbock Collegiate Classic. They are on a seven-game win streak.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .347 as a team (33rd nationally), with 10 home runs (11th nationally and 16th in home runs per game, 1.1) and 17 doubles (total ranks 24th nationally and their rate of 1.9 per game ranks 44th nationally) in nine games. LCU averages 8.8 runs a contest (18th nationally).

Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 3-1 this season with a 1.17 ERA in 18.0 innings pitched. She ranks third in the LSC (12th nationally) in hits allowed per seven innings (3.1).
  • Taylor Franco is 4-0 with a 0.98 ERA on the young season. She ranks 12th in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 1.93. She is 39-19 in her career, which has her 17th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins. The 39 wins sits third all-time in LCU program history in career wins.
  • Franco has no hitters in two of her last three appearances and has not allowed a run in 22.2 consecutive innings pitched. She co-leads LCU in career no-hitters with three.
  • Savannah Wysocki had two triples on the homestand last week, placing her with three of the season and 18 in her LCU career, which actively leads NCAA Division II in career triples. Wysocki, with eight stolen bases this season, has 78 in her career, ranking 10th among active career NCAA Division II leaders. Her eight stolen bases this season ranks 17th nationally.
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU, hitting .481 with 13 hits and 10 RBI. Her 13 hits rank 15th in the LSC.
  • Kasey Flores co-leads LCU (with Skylar Herrera) in home runs with three (fifth in LSC). Flores, a transfer from UTEP, sits 22nd actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 26. She leads the team with 11 RBI and seven have come with two-outs.
  • Skylar Herrera ranks tied for 35th nationally with six stolen bases on the season. She has 47 in her career, ranking 35th actively among NCAA Division II career leaders.
  • Brooke Makemson and Savannah Wysocki co-lead the team with three triples and are tied for third nationally (national co-leaders have four).
  • Tiarra Delrosario and Tyla Lee co-lead LCU in multi-hit games (4). Kasey Flores leads LCU with four multi-RBI games.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 454-147.
  • Along with surpassing 450 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 350 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Road Trips
  • LCU went 7-9 in road play last season
  • Ten (10) of LCU's 16 games played on the road last season were at teams nationally ranked.
 
Streaking Along
  • Tyla Lee is LCU's active hit-streak leader, entering the day on an eight-game hit streak. Savannah Wysocki has hit safely in her last six games.
  • Savannah Wysocki has reached base in all nine games this season. Tyla Lee has reached base safely in the prior eight games.
 
In Summary
  • LCU's odd innings are paying off this season, as they have a 14-2 scoring advantage in the first inning, 19-4 advantage in the third inning and a 15-1 advantage in the fifth inning this season.
  • The Lady Chaps have scored in the first inning in three games this season and are 3-0 when doing so. LCU is 6-1 when scoring first.

  • SAU was nationally ranked this season before falling out with a 4-6 season start, as a trio of their losses are to nationally ranked programs.
  • They are 1-2 this season against LSC programs.
  • SAU is hitting .275 this season and Utah Valley transfer Jade Miller leads the team hitting .415 with 17 hits and three homers.
  • The 'riders have a 2.55 ERA and have held their opponents to a .239 hitting mark. Sydney Ward is 3-2 with a 1.63 ERA has opponents hitting .202. She is tied for sixth nationally in starts (6).
  • SAU is sixth nationally in home runs (12) and rank 11th in home runs per game (1.2).
  • Southern Arkansas enters the season preseason picked to lead the GAC Preseason Poll.
