SILVER CITY, N.M. (March 18, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University returns to Lone Star Conference road play this weekend, as they open with Western New Mexico for a doubleheader Friday at Mustang Field.

LCU and WNMU Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over WNMU, 10-0.
  • All 10 meetings have been in Lubbock and LCU has an average of 10.7 runs for and 1.7 runs allowed in the series. LCU has scored at least 10 runs in seven of the eight all-time meetings.
  • LCU, who has never faced WNMU in Silver City, has shutout the Mustangs in the prior five meetings.
  • The Lady Chaps last met WNMU Mar. 19, 2021, as LCU defeated WNMU 9-0 and 12-0 in Lubbock.
  • Tyla Lee is 3-for-4 in her LCU career with three RBI all-time verses WNMU. LCU pitchers Taylor Franco and Maxine Valdez are each 1-0 all-time against WNMU.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 21-3 this season. They had an 18-game win streak earlier on the season, which was their longest win streak since a 19-game win streak since 2014.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .349 as a team (15th nationally), with 31 home runs (sixth nationally and eighth in home runs per game, 1.29) and 43 doubles (total ranks 26th nationally and their rate of 1.79 per game ranks 29th nationally) in 24 games. LCU averages 7.5 runs a contest (14th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 2.75 (66th nationally). Opponents are hitting .229 against LCU this season (fourth in the LSC).
  • The Lady Chaps are 26th in shutouts, with five, and two of LCU's shutouts are no-hitters.

Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 7-1 this season with a 2.23 ERA in 59.2 innings pitched. She ranks 10th in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (5.51). She has registered two saves, which has her tied for 10th nationally (four leads the nation) and is second in the LSC. She ranks fourth in the LSC in strikeouts with 73 (8.6 per seven innings ranks fifth in the LSC).
  • Taylor Franco is 11-1 with a 2.26 ERA on the young season. She ranks 22nd in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 2.06. She is 46-20 in her career, which has her 19th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins. The 46 wins sits third all-time in LCU program history in career wins. Franco's 11 wins this season co-leads the LSC and ranks eighth nationally.
  • Franco, who went 25.2 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run earlier this season, has two no-hitters on the season and co-leads LCU in career no-hitters with three.
  • Savannah Wysocki had a triple Monday, placing her with six on the season and 21 in her LCU career, which actively leads NCAA Division II in career triples. The six triples on the season co-leads all of Division II. Wysocki, with 13 stolen bases this season, has 71 in her career, ranking 15th among active career NCAA Division II leaders (third all-time in program history and one away from passing Mallory Koschany, who had 71 all in one season with LCU in 2013, and into second in program history). Her 13 stolen bases this season ranks 50th nationally (tied for sixth in the LSC).
  • Angela Donaldson enters the series leading LCU in hitting, with an average of .483, which ranks sixth in the conference and 31st nationally. Her .515 on-base percentage ranks 11th in the LSC.
  • Tyla Lee is hitting .468 (10th in the LSC) with 36 hits and 32 RBI (17 with two outs). Her 35 hits ranks second in the LSC. Lee claimed NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 22, marking a second consecutive season a Lady Chaps member received national honors. Last season, Brooke Makemson became LCU's first recipient of the national player of the week honor at the NCAA Division II level (Feb. 10, 2021). Lee has received two LSC Hitter of the Week honors this season. She claimed the fourth weekly honor by a Lady Chaps member this season on Mar. 8. Franco (Pitcher, Feb. 15), Kasey Flores (Hitter, Mar.1) and Lee (Hitter, Feb. 22) previously claimed weekly accolades this season.
  • Kasey Flores co-leads LCU in home runs with seven (tied for fourth in the LSC and with Lee). Flores sits 21st actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 30 (the mark includes her UTEP totals).
  • Skylar Herrera has eight stolen bases on the season, placing her with 46 in her career. She ranks third on the squad with five home runs.
  • LCU is eighth nationally in triples (14), with Savannah Wysocki co-leading the nation with six triples and Brooke Makemson behind her with four triples (ranks tied for ninth nationally).
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU in multi-hit games (12). Brooke Makemson leads LCU with nine multi-RBI games.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the weekend with a softball record of 468-148.
  • Along with surpassing 450 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 350 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Road Review
  • LCU is 5-0 this season in road contests.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .327 (nine home runs) in road tilts, and contributing a 3.78 ERA in the circle (opponents hitting .299).  
  • Skylar Herrera  (9-for-18) is leading LCU with a .500 average in road games.
  • Tyla Lee, co-leading LCU with nine hits on the road, leads the Lady Chaps with nine RBI in road play.
  • LCU has nine home runs on the road and all nine are from different individuals.
  • Maxine Valdez leads LCU with a 2.03 ERA on the road (she has two saves on the road). Taylor Franco (3-0) and Mattye Tyler (2-0) have the wins of record on the road for LCU.

  • This season is LCU's third season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 29-17 all-time in LSC play.
  • The Lady Chaps are 7-1 this season in conference contests. They opened conference play 4-0 for their best conference start since 2015.
  • They are hitting .342 in conference, with 10 home runs and an average of 7.4 runs per game. In the circle, they have a 4.41 ERA and opponents are hitting .285.
  • Angela Donaldson leads LCU in conference play, hitting .524 in conference.
  • Tyla Lee has 13 RBI in LSC play and leads LCU with three homers in conference.

National Notes
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs in 2020, but went 2-10 against nationally ranked programs in 2021.
  • LCU is 4-2 this season against nationally ranked programs, as they fell 8-4 in extra innings (9 innings) against No.14 Auburn Montgomery (Feb. 5 in Gulf Shores, Ala.) before garnering wins over No.14 Rogers State (13-5 in five innings on Feb. 20 in Oklahoma City) and No.18 Oklahoma Christian (doubleheader sweep on Friday, 4-3 and 8-7). LCU most recently split a doubleheader (Mar. 12) against No.6 West Texas A&M.
  • On Mar.1, LCU made their debut in the NFCA national Top-25 rankings, debuting at No.15. They moved up to No.14 this week.
 
Streaking Along
  • Tiarra Delrosario is LCU's active hit-streak leader, entering the day on a 17-game hit streak, which is LCU's longest steak this season.
  • Delrosario is also actively leading LCU with an 18-game streak of reaching base safely. Tyla Lee has the longest streak this season for LCU, with a streak of 19 games reaching base safely.

  • LCU has a 30-7 scoring advantage in the first inning, with their highest offensive output coming in the third inning, with a 32-17 scoring advantage.
