LCU heads to UTPB For Sunday LSC Doubleheader

ODESSA, Texas (March 20, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University looks to remain perfect in road play this season, as they face University of Texas of the Permian Basin for a Lone Star Conference series at Falcon Field Sunday afternoon.

LCU and UTPB Series Snapshot
  • LCU leads the all-time series over UTPB, 28-0.
  • Last season, LCU went 2-0 against the Falcons, with a 10-0 win (5 inn.) and 8-0 win (6 inn.) on Mar. 21, 2021 in Lubbock in their previous meeting.
  • Savannah Wysocki has nine hits all-time against UTPB and is hitting .563 with seven RBI in five games against the Falcons.
  • Taylor Franco is 3-0 all-time against UTPB with a 0.00 ERA. She has not allowed a run off four hits in 11.2 innings against UTPB (10 strikeouts). Maxine Valdez is 1-0 against UTPB and had a 5.0-inning no-hitter last season.
  • The prior eight meetings were played in Lubbock, as this series in Odessa marks the first meetings in Odessa since Apr. 10, 2017. LCU is 8-0 all-time against UTPB in Odessa.

  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .354 as a team (15th nationally), with 35 home runs (sixth nationally and eighth in home runs per game, 1.3) and 47 doubles (total ranks 26th nationally and their rate of 1.8 per game ranks 29th nationally) in 26 games. LCU averages 7.9 runs a contest (14th nationally).
  • In the circle, LCU has an ERA of 2.66 (66th nationally). Opponents are hitting .224 against LCU this season (fourth in the LSC).
  • The Lady Chaps are 26th in shutouts, with six, and two of LCU's shutouts are no-hitters.

Who is Doing What?
  • Pitcher Maxine Valdez is 7-1 this season with a 2.35 ERA in 62.2 innings pitched. She ranks 10th in the LSC in hits allowed per seven innings (5.47). She has registered two saves, which has her tied for 10th nationally (four leads the nation) and is second in the LSC. She ranks sixth in the LSC in strikeouts with 77 (8.6 per seven innings ranks fifth in the LSC).
  • Taylor Franco is 12-1 with a 2.06 ERA on the season. She ranks 22nd in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 2.06. She is 47-20 in her career, which has her 19th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins. The 47 wins sits third all-time in LCU program history in career wins. Franco's 12 wins this season co-leads the LSC and ranks eighth nationally. She has six career saves, which places her fourth all-time in program history.  She had two appearances Friday, providing her with her 84 career appearances, which moved her into second all-time in program history. She also moved into second all-time in program history in strikeouts with 343.
  • Franco, who went 25.2 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run earlier this season, has two no-hitters on the season and co-leads LCU in career no-hitters with three.
  • Savannah Wysocki had a triple Monday, placing her with six on the season and 21 in her LCU career, which actively leads NCAA Division II in career triples. The six triples on the season co-leads all of Division II. Wysocki, with 17 stolen bases this season, has 75 in her career, ranking 15th among active career NCAA Division II leaders (second all-time in program history). Her 17 stolen bases this season ranks 50th nationally (tied for fourtth in the LSC).
  • Angela Donaldson enters the series leading LCU in hitting, with an average of .500, which co-leads the conference and 31st nationally. Her .528 on-base percentage ranks 10th in the LSC.
  • Tyla Lee is hitting .452 (12th in the LSC) with 38 hits and 32 RBI (17 with two outs). Her 35 hits ranks tied for fourth in the LSC. Lee claimed NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 22, marking a second consecutive season a Lady Chaps member received national honors. Last season, Brooke Makemson became LCU's first recipient of the national player of the week honor at the NCAA Division II level (Feb. 10, 2021). Lee has received two LSC Hitter of the Week honors this season. She claimed the fourth weekly honor by a Lady Chaps member this season on Mar. 8. Franco (Pitcher, Feb. 15), Kasey Flores (Hitter, Mar.1) and Lee (Hitter, Feb. 22) previously claimed weekly accolades this season.
  • Kasey Flores co-leads LCU in home runs with seven (tied for fourth in the LSC and with Lee). Flores sits 21st actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 30 (the mark includes her UTEP totals).
  • Skylar Herrera, also co-leading LCU with seven homers, has nine stolen bases on the season, placing her with 47 in her career.
  • LCU is eighth nationally in triples (14), with Savannah Wysocki co-leading the nation with six triples and Brooke Makemson behind her with four triples (ranks tied for ninth nationally).
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU in multi-hit games (12). Brooke Makemson leads LCU with 10 multi-RBI games.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the weekend with a softball record of 470-148.
  • Along with surpassing 450 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 350 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Road Review
  • LCU is 7-0 this season in road contests.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .349 (13 home runs) in road tilts, and contributing a 3.43 ERA in the circle (opponents hitting .269).  
  • Angela Donaldson (11-for-21) is leading LCU with a .524 average in road games. Skylar Herrera (.522) leads LCU with three home runs in road play.
  • Herrera has 12 hits and 11 RBI in road games to lead in the categories.
  • LCU has 13 home runs on the road and hit by nine different individuals.
  • Taylor Franco (4-0) and Mattye Tyler (3-0) have the wins of record on the road for LCU. Franco has a 2.07 ERA to lead LCU on the road. Her and Maxine Valdez each have two saves on the road.
 
Lone Star Conference Breakdown
  • This season is LCU's third season in the LSC.
  • LCU is 31-17 all-time in LSC play.
  • The Lady Chaps are 9-1 this season in conference contests. They opened conference play 4-0 for their best conference start since 2015.
  • They are hitting .356 in conference, with 14 home runs and an average of 8.3 runs per game. In the circle, they have a 4.03 ERA and opponents are hitting .264.
  • Angela Donaldson leads LCU in conference play, hitting .524 in conference.
  • Tyla Lee has 13 RBI in LSC play and leads LCU with three homers in conference.
  • Mattye Tyler (4-0) and Taylor Franco (4-1) co-lead LCU in conference in wins in the circle, as Franco and  Maxine Valdez each have two saves.
 
National Notes
  • The Lady Chaps went 8-0 last season against nationally ranked programs in 2020, but went 2-10 against nationally ranked programs in 2021.
  • LCU is 4-2 this season against nationally ranked programs, as they fell 8-4 in extra innings (9 innings) against No.14 Auburn Montgomery (Feb. 5 in Gulf Shores, Ala.) before garnering wins over No.14 Rogers State (13-5 in five innings on Feb. 20 in Oklahoma City) and No.18 Oklahoma Christian (doubleheader sweep on Friday, 4-3 and 8-7). LCU most recently split a doubleheader (Mar. 12) against No.6 West Texas A&M.
  • On Mar.1, LCU made their debut in the NFCA national Top-25 rankings, debuting at No.15. They moved up to No.14 this week.
 
Streaking Along
  • Savannah Wysocki leads LCU actively on an 11-game hit streak. Tiarra Delrosario has the longest hit streak this season at 19 games.
  • Delrosario actively leads LCU with a 20-game streak of reaching base safely, which is the longest streak by a Lady Chap this season.
 
In Summary
  • LCU has a 33-9 scoring advantage in the first inning, with their highest offensive output coming in the third inning, with a 36-17 scoring advantage.
  • The Lady Chaps have scored in the first inning in 12 games this season and are 12-0 when doing so. LCU is 18-1 when scoring first.
  • LCU is 18-0 this season when they hit at least one home run in a game.

Looking at UTPB
  • The Falcons went 7-33 last season, finishing 14th in the LSC with a 5-25 conference mark. They have already surpassed last season's overall win totals, entering Sunday with a 16-15 overall record and 3-7 in LSC play.
  • UTPB is hitting .325 this season and have 15 home runs on the season. They have a staff ERA of 6.07 and opponents are hitting .279 against them.
  • They are seeking to snap a six-game losing streak, and all six games have been against nationally ranked opponents. LCU will make it eight consecutive games against ranked teams for the Falcons. They were 8-1 at home until dropping their last two home games Friday, suffering a sweep to the hands of Angelo State.
  • UTPB is preseason picked 14th in the LSC Preseason Poll.
  • The Falcons rank seventh nationally and third in the LSC in hits with 270. Valerie Gonzalez ranks tied for sixth in the LSC with 37 hits (22nd nationally).
  • Ashlyn Bradley leads the LSC in sacrifice flies with four sac flies, which is second nationally. As a team, the Falcons are tied for third in the LSC with 10 sacrifice flies (LCU leads with 13).
