LAWTON, Okla. (March 5, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University hopes they still have momentum on their side. Roding a 16-game win streak and coming off a pair of comeback wins Friday at No.18 Oklahoma Christian, the Lady Chaparrals head to Cameron for a 3 p.m. doubleheader to complete their opening week of Lone Star Conference play.

LCU and OC Series Snapshot
  • The all-time series is tied 3-3.
  • LCU and Cameron have split LSC doubleheader series in each of the past two seasons, as LCU is 1-1 in Lubbock and 1-1 in Cameron all-time. The teams previous meeting in Lawton, Okla. resulted in a 2-1 LCU win and a 6-4 Cameron win (both games played Feb. 28, 2020. The 2-1 win was LCU's first LSC win in program history.
  • The two teams opened Lone Star Conference play last season (Feb. 28, 2020) in Lawton, Okla., with LCU winning the opener 2-1, but falling 6-4 in the second contest.
  • Prior to the four conference contests over the past two seasons, the two programs had met twice in neutral site contests. The first meeting was in the Mansfield North Texas Softball Bash (Mansfield, Texas) on Feb. 19, 2015, with Cameron defeating LCU 4-2. They also met in San Angelo, Texas at the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament, which resulted in a 14-11 LCU win (LCU came back from a 10-3 deficit).
  • Taylor Franco is 2-0 in her LCU career against Cameron with a 1.40 ERA and holding the Aggies to a .214 batting average. She has 14 strikeouts in 15.0 innings pitched.
  • Athena Muniz is 7-of-12 (.583) all-time against Cameron, with two home runs and three RBI in four games.
 
How is the Team Doing?
  • LCU is 16-2 this season. They are riding a 16-game win streak, which is their longest win streak since a 17-game win streak since 2016.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .343 as a team (24th nationally), with 22 home runs (eighth nationally and 11th in home runs per game, 1.2) and 33 doubles (total ranks 25th nationally and their rate of 1.83 per game ranks 44th nationally) in 18 games. LCU averages 7.4 runs a contest (23rd nationally).

  • Taylor Franco is 9-0 with a 1.19 ERA on the young season. She ranks 14th in active career ERA in NCAA with a career mark of 1.91. She is 44-19 in her career, which has her 18th in active career NCAA Division II leaders in wins. The 44 wins sits third all-time in LCU program history in career wins.
  • Franco's nine wins leads the LSC and ranks seventh nationally, while Valdez's six wins ranks 23rd nationally and is tied for eighth in the LSC.
  • Franco, who went 25.2 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run earlier this season, has two no-hitters on the season and co-leads LCU in career no-hitters with three.
  • Savannah Wysocki had a triple Saturday, placing her with four on the season and 19 in her LCU career, which actively leads NCAA Division II in career triples. The four triples on the season ranks fourth in NCAA Division II (three players have five to co-lead nationally). Wysocki, with 11 stolen bases this season, has 69 in her career, ranking 10th among active career NCAA Division II leaders (third all-time in program history and three away from passing Mallory Koschany, who had 71 all in one season with LCU in 2013, and into second in program history). Her 11 stolen bases this season ranks 23rd nationally (tied for sixth in the LSC).
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU, hitting .491 with 27 hits and 20 RBI. Her 27 hits ranks fourth in the LSC. Lee claimed NFCA National Player of the Week on Feb. 22, marking a second consecutive season a Lady Chaps member received national honors. Last season, Brooke Makemson became LCU's first recipient of the national player of the week honor at the NCAA Division II level (Feb. 10, 2021).
  • Kasey Flores made it a second consecutive week of LSC Hitter of the Week honors, winning the award this week. Flores helped LCU complete a doubleheader non-conference sweep of Eastern New Mexico at home, as she hit .667 and produced a 1.667 slugging percentage. The El Paso, Texas native was 2-for-3 in the doubleheader, with two RBI, a home run and an .857 on-base percentage. She drew four walks, with three obtained in the opening game. Flores was 1-for-1 with a home run and two RBI (reached base in four plate appearances). The UTEP transfer was 1-for-2 in the second game. The honor is the first LSC honor for the first-year Chap. She claims the third weekly honor by a Lady Chaps member this season. Franco (Pitcher, Feb. 15) and Lee (Hitter, Feb. 22) previously claimed weekly accolades this season.
  • Kasey Flores, coming off a 4-RBI game Friday in the second game at Oklahoma Christian, leads LCU in home runs with six (tied for second in the LSC). Flores sits 21st actively among NCAA Division II leaders in home runs with 29 (the mark includes her UTEP totals).
  • Skylar Herrera has eight stolen bases on the season, placing her with 46 in her career, ranking 46th actively among NCAA Division II career leaders. She ranks second on the squad with five home runs (27th nationally) and is fourth on the squad in RBI (14), with a team-leading 10 with two-outs.
  • LCU is sixth nationally in triples (10), with Savannah Wysocki ranking fourth in the nation with four triples and Brooke Makemson is right behind with three triples (ranks 10th nationally).
  • Tyla Lee leads LCU in multi-hit games (9). Brooke Makemson and Kasey Flores co-lead LCU with six multi-RBI games.
 
Season Expectations
  • The Lady Chaps are preseason picked to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference.
  • LCU is in their eighth season playing a NCAA Division II schedule (2013 was their last season in NAIA) and this is their third season as members of the Lone Star Conference.
  • There are 16 softball programs in the LSC this season. The major difference from last season to this season is UT Tyler is postseason eligible.

Coach Talk
  • LCU head coach Daren Hays is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Chaps.
  • Hays is LCU's winningest softball head coach, entering the season with a softball record of 463-147.
  • Along with surpassing 450 coaching wins in softball, Hays had surpassed 350 wins as a collegiate baseball head coach. He spent eight seasons as the LCU baseball head coach and compiled a 356-163 record.
 
Road Review
  • LCU is 3-0 this season in road contests.
  • The Lady Chaps are hitting .277 (three home runs) in road tilts, and contributing a 1.83 ERA in the circle (opponents hitting .277).  
  • Kasey Flores (4-for-8) is leading LCU with a .500 average in road games.
