Chaps to face tough field at Farmers Insurance/Sam Proal Invitational

PUEBLO, Colo. - After competing in the Dallas Baptist Individual, the Lubbock Christian men's golf team heads to Pueblo, Colo. for the Farmers Insurance/Sam Proal Invitational.

The field is stacked with tough Division-II teams, including no. 14 CSU Pueblo and a Colorado Mesa squad that is receiving votes in the national poll, along with nationally ranked JUCO teams no. 6 Dodge City and no. 1 Hutchinson. Lone Star Conference foe UT Tyler will also compete in Pueblo this week.

Lightning in the area ended the DBU Individual early two weeks ago, with Hayden Bowman finishing inside the top-15 of the field in his first tournament action as a Chap.

The first round of the tournament concluded with a solid showing from Bowman who sat tied for 12th with a one-over 71 after the first 18 holes. Bowman impressed in his first round as a Chap, recovering from a four-over score on the front nine to card four birdies on the tenth, 14th, 16th, and 17th holes down the stretch. Bowman's five total birdies were the most of any player in the opening round.

In the second round, Bowman started two-over on the front nine, but a pair of birdies on the back nine, including his second of the day on the 14th hole, gave the freshman a two-over 72 for the second round. Bowman finished the tournament tied for 17th with Garrett Honeycutt of UT Tyler with a two-over 143 for the day.

His eight total birdies tied for the most in the field during the entire tournament. Bowman's two-under average score of 4.50 on par fives is tied for the second-best score on the longest holes at the Golf Club of Dallas.

Last season at the 2021 Farmers Insurance/Sam Proal Invitational, the Chaps had the seventh-best second round of the 19 teams in the event, moving up three spots to finish 12th.

Three players shot par or better in the second round, including a 68 from Jeff Maciejewski, which matched the best score of his career.

Braxton Floyd recorded a 70 in the second round of the 2021 tournament, his first under-par tournament round of the year. His round was a bit of a roller coaster, as he bogeyed four holes on his front nine, but bounced back strong with five birdies in the last eight holes to finish one down.

Floyd had nine birdies in the tournament overall, which was the most of any LCU player. His total score of 142 put him in a tie for 24th individually.

Tiaan de Jager and Jake Bowen posted the exact same score in round two, with a pair of 79s. De Jager finished the tournament tied for 88th and Bowen took 96th place.
