Chaps impress and improve at MLK Invitational

LCU breaks five school records in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Lubbock Christian set five new school records and improved on several marks at the Dr. Martin Luther King Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Sheyla Vilca set a new school record in the 600-meter run, finishing 14th with a time of 1:42.69. That mark beats Julia Winski's mark of 1:46.00 set at the 2018 GVSU Big Meet. Her teammate Sydney Jones finished behind her at 15th with a time of 1:44.17, a time that would've also broken the school record. Vilca finished first in her heat, beating out a pair of runners from New Mexico Highlands.

Joy Egwu broke her school record in the 60-meter run not once, but twice. She first set a new record mark in the prelims, recording a time of 7.82 seconds, beating her mark of 7.91 seconds set last week at Texas Tech. In the finals, Egwu finished fourth overall, her first career top-10 finish in the event, beating her record again with a time of 7.74 seconds. 

Bryce Spencer broke his own school record for the third straight week, finishing sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 18.82 meters. The mark beats his old record set last week at Texas Tech by 0.05 meters. Spencer was the highest Division-II finisher, and beat out competitors from UCLA, West Texas A&M, UTEP, Texas, CSU-Pueblo, CSU-Northridge, Baylor and Eastern New Mexico. Spencer has broken or reset a school record at every event he has competed in this season.

Kevin Washington broke his own school record in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a distance of 14.79 meters. That mark is an NCAA provisional mark, and is the 18th best in Division-II. Washington beat out competitors from Baylor, UCLA, and CSU-Northridge. Washington has recorded four straight top-10 finishes in indoor triple jump, and has finished inside the top-10 in the triple jump at 13 straight meets counting the outdoor season.

In his second career race, Nathaniel Luna broke the school record in the 60-meter run for the second straight meet, with a time of 6.88 seconds. That time is just 0.02 seconds from an NCAA provisional mark. The freshman beat out his own record by 0.06 seconds. Luna also recorded a top-10 finish in the 200-meter run, finishing eighth with a time of 21.96 seconds. That time beats his old personal best mark by 0.50 seconds. 

For the second straight week, Coulter Reel made history for the Lady Chaps, recording the first ever NCAA indoor high jump mark in school history, clearing 1.50 meters. Last week, Reel tallied the first Lady Chap NCAA indoor 60-meter hurdle time at the Corky Classic. Reel made history again, recording the first NCAA indoor triple jump mark for the Lady Chaps, finishing 19th with a mark of 9.69 meters. Reel competed in five total events, setting a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.06 seconds. She also took part in the long jump for the first time in her college career, recording a mark of 4.21 meters, and competed in the 400-meter for the first time, finishing 18th with a time of 1:02.69.

Cayden Butler recorded his second straight top-10 finish in the high jump, finishing fourth in the event after clearing the bar at 2.00 meters on his third attempt. Aaron Kim of UCLA finished ahead of Butler after clearing the bar on his first attempt. Butler beat out competitors from CSU-Northridge, UTEP, New Mexico, CSU-Pueblo, and Baylor.

Keitron Boyd finished fourth in his section of the 200-meter run, winning his heat by 0.11 seconds with a time of 21.79 seconds. Boyd beat out runners from Grand Canyon, CSU-Northridge, and UTSA in his heat. It is Boyd's ninth career indoor top-10 finish in the event.

Chris Rader picked up his second straight top-10 finish in the 400-meter run, finishing fourth with a personal best mark of 49.57 seconds. Rader beat his old personal best by 0.32 seconds.He finished second in his heat.

Kamille Boyd picked up an eighth place finish in the 60-meter run, finishing at an even 8.00 seconds. She also improved her time in the 200-meter run, finishing with a new personal best time of 26.56, beating her old mark by 0.13 seconds.

Madelyn Merrell picked up a ninth place finish in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:20.01. Merrell has finished in the top-10 of the 800-meter in three straight overall meets, and in three straight indoor meets.

The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Chris Rader, Ryan Gordon, Keitron Boyd, and George Garcia finished seventh with a time of 3:15.92. The quartet beat out UTEP in the race. Their counterparts in the women's race of Jozalyn Arana, Kiley Cummings, Michaelle Sime, and Egwu finished 10th in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:01.20, missing the school record by 0.05 seconds. The Lady Chaps beat out New Mexico State and two teams from Pepperdine.

Thomas McCully competed in three different events for the Chaps, recording a new personal best in the 60-meter run with a time of 7.29 seconds, beating his old mark set last week by 0.07 seconds. McCully also competed in the long jump for the first time in his career, recording a mark of 5.72 meters. He also took on shot put for the first time, recording a toss of 9.93 meters.

Lauren Guthrie improved on her career-best in the pole vault, finishing 16th after clearing the bar at 3.10 meters on her second try.

Hailey Lowery set a new personal best in the 3000-meter run, finishing 12th with a mark of 11:28.59, beating her old personal best time by almost eight seconds.

Luke Mosley competed in the 600-meter run for the first time in his career, finishing with a time of 1:25.59. His teammate Riley Webb also competed in the race for the first time, finishing behind Mosley with a time of 1:27.01.

Paityn Green demolished her old personal best in the weight throw by 1.20 meters, recording a toss of 13.21 meters. 

Turner Edwards competed in the long jump for the first time, finishing with a distance of 5.13 meters.

Garrett Dixon set a new personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 11.86 meters on his second attempt. That mark beats his old personal best set last week by 0.05 meters. 

In her first meet as a Lady Chap, Jazmene Duran recorded a mark of 11.70 meters in the shot put.

Ryan Gordon ran the 60-meter run for the first time in his career, finishing with a time of 7.06 seconds. Ju'Raylin Shaw also competed in the 60-meter for the first time in his career, finishing with a time of 7.17 seconds.

Landon Bowers competed in the 400-meter run for the first time in his collegiate career, recording a time of 52.05 seconds and a 14th place finish. His teammate Hunter Gossett set a new personal best in the event by 0.14 seconds, finishing with a time of 52.54 seconds.

Michaelle Sime ran the 60-meter run for the first time in her career, recording a time of 8.19 seconds and a 16th place finish in the race.

Hagen Sage set a new personal best in the mile, finishing the race in 4:37.60. Sage improved his personal best by 0.11 seconds. Sage also finished 10th in the 800-meter run, finishing the race with a time of 2:03.01. On the women's side, his counterpart Adrianna Langat ran the mile for the first time in her career, recording a time of 6:17.40 and a 16th place finish.

Julia Nelson ran the 800-meter run for the first time in her college career, finishing 14th with a time of 2:33.24

The track and field squads will split up for the first time this season, with some athletes heading back to New Mexico for the UNM Open, while the rest will stay home for the Texas Tech Open. Both meets will be held Jan. 27-28.
