Aggies Visit Rip for LSC Battle

Chaps Host Cameron on Saturday

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (13-6, 8-3)
vs. CAMERON (6-12, 3-9)
Saturday, January 25 – 3 p.m.
Rip Griffin Center (Lubbock, Texas)

TIPOFF
Lubbock Christian will host Cameron on Saturday looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 3-9 when they won three straight games against Eastern New Mexico, West Texas A&M and Sul Ross State. The Chaps have gone 1-1 in each of the last two weeks, winning the Thursday game before losing on Saturday. They will try for the Saturday win this week against the Aggies, who have lost 12 games on the year, although six of those losses have come by single-digits.

I'LL TAKE THAT
Lubbock Christian forced a season-high 21 turnovers on Thursday against Oklahoma Christian, including 13 in the second half alone. It is the most turnovers forced by the Chaps in a game against a Division II opponent since March 6, 2020, when they forced 22 in a double overtime game against Angelo State in the LSC Tournament. The last time they forced at least 21 in a regulation game since Nov. 23, 2019 when they forced 22 from Angelo State. LCU has now forced 242 turnovers this season for an average of 13.0 per game. Their turnover margin of 3.21 is the sixth-best in the LSC.

CHARITY STRIPE
Although their 290 attempts are the third-fewest in the conference, Lubbock Christian leads the league in free throw shooting percentage at 76.2 percent. The Chaps were 9-11 from the free throw line on Thursday, shooting 81.8 percent. It is their ninth game this season shooting at least 80 percent on free throws. They shot a season-high 94.1 percent last week against UT Permian Basin, missing just one attempt. Ty Caswell and Ethan Duncan are both shooting better than 90 percent from the line at 95.7 and 92.9 percent, respectively.

PROTECT THE ROCK
This season, the Chaps average just 9.8 turnovers per game, which is the fewest in the Lone Star Conference and ranks No. 13 nationally. They turned it over 13 times on Thursday, but had just five of those in the second half. Last Saturday against Angelo State, they turned it over just two times, which was their fewest in a single game since 2021. LCU also ranks second in the league in assist to turnover ratio at 1.49. Chap guard Najeeb Muhammad is the league-leader in that category individually at 3.4.

BEYOND THE ARC
Lubbock Christian shot 35.7 percent on three-pointers Thursday night, hitting 10 of their 28 attempts. Five of those makes came from Duncan, who has now made 63 this season, which is the eighth-most in all of Division II and leads the LSC. As a team, the Chaps shoot 39.5 percent from behind the arc, which ranks No. 7 nationally and first in the league. Jaylen Thompson has only attempted 24 three-pointers, but is shooting a whopping 50 percent, and Caswell is also shooting better than 40 percent.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST
The Chaps limited the Eagles to just 51 points on Thursday, which is tied for the lowest an opponent has scored against them this season. They also limited UT Tyle to only 51 points on Dec. 4, 2024. The Eagles shot 42.6 percent overall, but only 34.8 percent in the second half. Chap opponents this season are averaging just 66.9 points per game this season, which is tied for the fourth-best mark in the LSC. They shoot 44.2 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc.

LOOKING AT THE LONE STAR
St. Mary's retained their spot atop the conference on Thursday with a 68-60 win against Angelo State. They will take on third place UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The Falcons got a big win themselves, beating St. Edward's on the road on a buzzer-beater three-pointer, 87-86. The shot came from Dario Domingos, who was 0-for-2 from behind the arc for the season prior to hitting the game-winner. DBU sits in second at 10-2, and the Chaps are in a tie for fourth with Midwestern State, who they will play in back-to-back games to end the regular season.

WHERE THE HEART IS
Saturday marks the second game in a four game homestand for the Chaps, who are 5-2 at the Rip Griffin Center this season. On their home floor this season, LCU is averaging 83.7 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting. Opponents in the Rip are averaging 66.0 points on just 46.5 percent shooting. Amondo Miller Jr., Ethan Duncan, Ty Caswell, Sean Murphy and Najeeb Muhammad are all averaging double-figures at home this year. The Chaps are 149-81 (.649) in home games under head coach Todd Duncan.

THE SERIES WITH THE AGGIES
Lubbock Christian and Cameron first met on the hardwood all the way back in 1973, but have only met 20 times since then. The Aggies lead the all-time series 11-10, but nine of their victories came prior to the 21st century. The only two times Cameron has won when both schools were in the NCAA was 2016 and 2022, which was a double-overtime win. LCU has won the last four matchups, including the last one 89-64.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
  • Cameron enters Saturday's matchup riding a three-game losing streak. Their last win was on Jan. 11 against Texas A&M-International
  • CU guard Reggie Prudhomme leads the LSC and ranks No. 8 nationally with 6.1 assists per game
  • Aggie head coach Kevin O'Connor is in his third season leading the Cameron program. He was previously at Murray State College, where he coach Lloyd Daniels, who then played for the Chaps for three seasons and is now a graduate assistant for the program
  • Cameron has the second-worst defense in the LSC, allowing an average of 78.5 points per game
  • Aggie forward Jaxon Ingram leads the conference in rebounding, pulling down an average of 10.1 per contest
