LUBBOCK, Texas (November 1, 2014) – Texas Tech transfer
Kellyn Schneider was a rebound shy of a triple-double, as her 13-point and 11-block double-double helped Lubbock Christian University defeat Wayland Baptist University 76-55 in an exhibition game at Rip Griffin Center.
Schneider led the Lady Chaps with 13 points and was one of four players in double figures offensively.
Bailey Haist and
Haley Burton each had 12 points and
Haley Fowler added 10 points in the LCU win. LCU produced 17 blocks in the game, with 11 coming from Schneider and four from
Tess Bruffey.
The game was not all smooth sailing for the Lady Chaps, who out-rebounded WBU 54-50 (
Allison Szabo led LCU with 12). The two former Sooner Athletic Conference rivals were tied 30-30 at the half, as LCU shot 32% in the first half (8/25). They outscored WBU 46-25 in the second half shooting 50% (16/32) and holding WBU to 18.4% (9/49) in the half. LCU committed 23 turnovers in the game, with WBU grabbing 14 steals.
WBU had 27 more shots than LCU, as 25 offensive rebounds (mostly off blocks) led to second chance opportunities. Of WBU's 84 shots, Stephanie Afunugo (29) and LaTericka Anderson (20) combined for 49 of them. Afunugo finished with a double-double (17 points and 13 boards). WBU was 17-of-84 (20.2%) from the field in the game. LCU outscored WBU 36-5 in bench scoring.
LCU has two exhibition games scheduled this season. The next is Nov.10 at home hosting Our Lady of the Lake University. Although an exhibition game for LCU, the game will be the regular season opener for OLLU.
