Channing Castleberry and
Samantha Matthews combined for 24 kills and five blocks, offering their Lady Chap seniors a nice farewell gift during Lubbock Christian's 3-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center.
Castleberry totaled a game-high 14 kills and Matthews supplied 10 kills along with four blocks in the final home contest for
Christa Daniel,
Abby White,
Erin Fisher and
Amy Edwards. The quad put together quite the collective performance in their final match at The Rip, with Fisher tallying game-highs of 43 assists and five blocks, Edwards providing nine kills and five blocks, White totaling nine kills, and Daniel notching a game-high 21 digs.
White sent an attack down the line for her first kill of the match at the 2-2 mark in set one, and Matthews converted on a slide moments later for an 11-7 Lady Chap advantage. The Falcons crept to within 15-14 on a kill from Morgann Davis, but LCU put together a 9-2 run capped by a Castleberry kill on a nice set from Daniel to put the Lady Chaps at set point. Castleberry then provided the final point on another kill to finish off set one, 25-17.
After beginning set two in a 4-1 deficit, the Lady Chaps jumped ahead 7-5 after a combined block from Edwards and Fisher and upped their lead to 11-5 on a Castleberry kill. The Falcons responded with five straight points to pull within 11-10, but the Lady Chaps went on a scoring barrage of their own to jump ahead 15-10. Fisher got in on the scoring action by putting down a kill at 18-14, igniting her team and directing them to the 25-19 victory.
LCU put on a hitting clinic in set three, totaling a .533 attack percentage, leading to a season-high .378 output for the match. A block by Matthews and Fisher knotted the set at 7-all before the Lady Chaps cruised out to a 17-10 lead on the heels of kills by White and Castleberry. Successive kills by Fisher extended LCU's lead to 20-12, and the Lady Chaps finished off the set, 25-13, for the sweep.
For UTPB, Davis recorded 10 kills. LCU now holds a 33-3 all-time record over the Falcons.
The Lady Chaps wrap up the 2014 season next week, traveling to St. Edward's on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match and then to Angelo State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
