Burton Eclipses 1,000 Career Points, But Win Streak Snapped In Season Opener

Program Record 23-Game Win Streak Snapped

GOLDEN, Colo. (November 14, 2014) – Haley Burton tied a program single-game record with seven three-pointers, leading to a 29-point performance to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in her Lubbock Christian University career, but her performance was not good enough to extend the NCAA Division II's second-leading active win streak, as the program record win streak came to an end with a season opening 93-90 loss to University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday at the Tony Corbetta Classic inside Colorado School of Mines' Lockridge Arena.

Burton is the newest member of the 1,000-point club in LCU history and the first since teammate Nicole Hampton eclipsed the mark last season. She entered the game needing 10 points to hit the mark and she easily completed the task in the first half with 21 of her points coming in the first half. She was 5-of-5 from long range in the first half and then connected with two three-pointers late in regulation. It was a career high for her and LCU has not had a player with at least seven three-pointers since Nov. 17, 2011 with Kelsey Hoppel recording seven three-pointers at Azusa Pacific.

Burton and sophomore Bailey Haist combined 9-for-11 from three-point range and accounted for 35 of LCU's 44 points in the first half. Haist, a Colorado Springs, Colo. native, had the early bragging rights playing against her sister McKenna Haist. The two teams combined for 16 three-pointers in the first half. LCU was 9-for-15 (60%) and UCCS was 7-for-12. LCU had a 13-point lead in the first half before taking a 44-37 lead into the locker room for half time. UCCS had 19 of their 37 points in the first half scored off the bench for a 19-0 advantage against LCU's bench. Gabby Ramirez produced 11 points off the bench for UCCS and connected on three three-pointers.

The momentum shift occurred midway through the second half. After a Blair Taylor three-pointer put LCU up 57-49 with 14:31 to go, UCCS went on a 13-4 run for a 62-61 advantage. Hayley Fowler helped LCU produce a 9-2 run, which gave LCU a 77-73 lead with 4:46 remaining, but LCU could not hold the lead. From the 4:46 mark until 25 seconds remaining, LCU was 1-of-8 from the field and committed a pair of turnovers, while UCCS out-scored them 16-3 during the scoring drought. Down, 89-80 with 30 seconds to go, LCU did make things interesting. Tess Bruffey connected on a field goal and Burton connected on her final two three-pointers in the game's final 16 seconds. Her final long range shot was made with three seconds left to cut the deficit to 93-90.Jessica Kienitz was fouled with one second remaining and missed her first free throw. There was a lane violation against UCCS on her second attempt, so LCU did have an inbounds needing a desperation heave with one second left, but they never got a shot off.

UCCS produced 11 of their final 15 points over the game's final 2:42 from the free-throw line, including the final eight points over the final 1:04. The last six points were off successful free-throw attempts by Abby Kirchoff, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Preseason Player of the Year. She was 13-for-13 from the free-throw line (all in the second half), which is the best mark by a LCU opposing player since opposing player highs were kept on file five seasons ago.

The two teams combined for five free-throws in the first half, but the second half witnessed a combined 43 free-throw attempts. UCCS, who had two free-throw attempts in the first half, had 29 attempts in the second half. They knocked down 25 of the 29 attempts in the half (86.2%) and finished the game 25-of-31 (80.6%) from the line.  UCCS had a 25-12 advantage in points from the line in the game over LCU, who was 70.6% (12-of-17) from the line in the game.

The Lady Chaps (32/69, 46.4%) out-shot UCCS (28/63 44.4%) from the field in the game, which had both teams shooting over 50% from long range (LCU: 14/27, 51.9%; UCCS: 12/21, 57.1%). Burton led all scorers with 29 points. She was joined offensively by Tess Bruffey (16 points), Haist (14 points) and Fowler (11 points) in the losing effort. Bruffey completed a double-double with 10 rebounds in her colle-giate debut. Kirchoff finished with 26 points and eight assists. The Mountain Lions also had 20 points from Brittany Hernandez, 16 points from Ramirez and 11 points from Tori Fisher.

LCU entered the game with a 23-game win streak, which was second in the country behind Bentley's 35-game active win streak. It was the longest win streak in program history and it nearly lasted an entire year, as LCU's prior loss had been on the road at Tarleton State on Nov. 16, 2014.

Season openers have not been all that nice to head coach Steve Gomez. LCU, falling 23-13 all-time in season openers, is now 7-5 in openers under Coach Gomez. They have not won a season opener on the road since winning at LSU-Shreveport to open the 2006-2007 season.

They will aim to salvage the trip to Colorado Saturday seeking a split on the trip. They face Colorado School of Mines at 7 p.m. (Central) from Golden, Colo.  The Orediggers opened their season Friday with a narrow win over Eastern New Mexico.
