All-Time Series: LCU leads 2-1

The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals seek revenge of their only Heartland Conference loss Saturday, as they close out a three-game home stand hosting Newman University for a Heartland Con-ference contest.

The Lady Chaps are atop the Heartland Conference standings with a 10-1 record and are 16-5 overall. They have won eight consecutive games and their only loss in conference play this season (and ever in Heartland Conference play) was on Jan. 8 in Wichita, Kan. at Newman. LCU shot a miserable 29.4% from the free-throw line (5/17) and committed 23 turnovers en route to a 52-46 loss. The Lady Chaps were without Haley Burton in the game, but she is back and leading LCU with 14.4 points per game. LCU has shot better than 50% from the field in five of their last seven games and has held opponents to shoot 35% or worse in eight of the last nine games. They have also produced at least 11 blocks in three of the last five games.

ABOUT NEWMAN
The Jets come to Lubbock with a 4-8 conference record and sitting ninth in the conference. They dropped to 7-13 overall after suffering a 65-49 loss Thursday at Oklahoma Panhandle. Newman is 1-6 on the road. Brianna Caldwell leads the conference in three-point field goals (60 three-pointers) and Keesha Buckner is second in steals (61 steals).

THE SERIES AGAINST NU
LCU is 2-1 against Newman all-time. LCU swept the season series last season, but Newman upset LCU 52-46 in the first meeting this season (Jan. 8, 2015). The last meeting in Lubbock was on Nov. 23, 2013, with LCU defeating Newman 95-66.

THE LAST MEETING AGAINST NEWMAN
Jan. 8, 2015 (WICHITA, Kan.) - LCU: 46 / OC 52
The longest active conference win streak in NCAA Div. II came to an end, as Lubbock Christian University had an all-around "off night" and Newman University ended LCU's 25-game conference win streak with 20 points from DeKendra Ledoux to defeat the Lady Chaparrals 52-46 at Fugate Gymnasium.

The loss was LCU's first ever Heartland Conference loss and it marked their first conference loss since a Sooner Athletic Conference road loss at Rogers State on Feb. 14, 2013. It took a night of LCU misfor-tunes for the streak to end against a Jets squad that garnered their first conference win (1-4) of the sea-son.

LCU shot a miserable 29.4% (5/17) from the charity stripe, marking their lowest free-throw total (five) since making five on Jan. 29, 2009 (vs. John Brown). The 29.4% mark by the program which has ranked in the top ten nationally in the prior nine consecutive seasons (leading the nation on three occasions) is the lowest under head coach Steve Gomez, who is in his 12th season coaching the Lady Chaps. Also contributing to the anomalous performance was the team's 23 turnovers. The turnovers are the most committed by LCU since they committed 23 on Jan. 31, 2013 against Mid-America Christian University.

The Lady Chaps were held to 46 points for their lowest offensive outing since held to 44 points on Nov. 5, 2011 against Metro State University. The point total was the lowest for a conference road game for LCU since held to 40 points by Oklahoma City University on Jan. 2, 2010.

Despite the negative numbers, LCU had opportunities to walk away with the victory over NU. The game featured nine lead changes. LCU climbed from a 28-22 halftime deficit and led 38-36 with 8:49 remaining, but the Jets responded with an 8-3 run for a 47-41 lead with 2:27 left. Brianna Caldwell hit a pair of three-pointers during the run. She was 0-of-9 from long range prior to connecting on consecutive attempts. LCU was unable to rally, going 2-of-7 from the field over the final three minutes and committing a pair of turnovers.

Ledoux led all scorers with 20 points and was 7-of-18 from the field. Kesha Buckner joined her in the winning effort in double figures with 11 points. Allison Szabo was 5-of-8 from the field and led LCU with 11 points. Blair Taylor was LCU's only other offensive threat with 10 points. She had two of LCU's three three-pointers in the game, as LCU was 3-of-14 (21.4%) from the field. LCU was productive inside, out-scoring NU 30-18 in the paint and shooting 51.6% (16/31) inside the arc. Newman won despite shooting 33.9% (19/56) from the field. Haley Burton had a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
