Chaps Back on The Road to Face Aggies

LCU Looking For Season’s First Win Away From Home

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (4-4, 1-2) at
CAMERON (2-6, 1-1)
Thursday, December 19 – 7:30 p.m.
Aggie Gym – Lawton, Oklahoma

THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL
Lubbock Christian and Cameron have met once in each of the last three seasons, twice playing in the Rip Griffin Center and once facing off in Aggie Gym. Those games have always been important to schedule for Chap head coach Todd Duncan and his staff for getting into and earning a better seed for the NCAA South Central Regional at the end of the regular season. For the first time on Thursday, however, the winner and loser of the matchup between Lubbock Christian and Cameron will have implications on the conference standings. This will be their only meeting during the season, as they are split into separate divisions. Both teams have one conference win so far, with Cameron having beaten Western New Mexico and LCU having taken down Tarleton. The Chaps are 1-2 in league play, while the Aggies are just 1-1.

2020 VISION
The two games this weekend against Cameron and Midwestern State will wrap up the calendar year for what has been a largely successful 2019 for the Lubbock Christian men's basketball team. The year started with LCU's win over Randall, which featured former Chap Brennan Fowler setting a new LCU record with 47 points. Lubbock Christian played 26 games overall in 2019, going 16-10 overall in that time. They averaged 74.0 points per game, while limiting opponents to just 69.5 points per game and will look to carry over that success into 2020 and beyond.

CRAZY EIGHTS
Red-shirt sophomore guard Cameron Copley has been good at dishing out assists ever since he first stepped onto the court for the Chaps last season, and in each of the last three games he has tallied exactly eight assists. The Canadian native has led LCU in the assist category in every game this season but one, tallying 46 in total for the year (5.8 per game). Copley's assist average ranks No. 3 in all of the Lone Star Conference and is just .1 assist behind St. Mary's' Kobe Magee, who is in second. He is also No. 10 in the conference in assist to turnover ratio.

NEW-LOOK CHAPS
After losing their two leading scorers from a season ago, Lubbock Christian brought in a number of new faces to help the offense reload. So far this season, 53 percent (39.1 points per game) of the Chaps' scoring is coming from players who were not on the team a season ago. Lloyd Daniels leads the group of newcomers with a team-high 12.9 points per game. Parker Hicks, a transfer from Texas Tech, is also averaging double figures with 10.0 points per game and leading the team in three-pointers made (21) and three-point field goal percentage (.488).

SEEING DOUBLE
LCU's lone senior on the team, Rashaan Proctor, became the first Chap this season to record a double-double last Thursday, as the Chaps took down Tarleton for their first-ever LSC win. Proctor scored a season-high 19 points on an extremely efficient 8-10 shooting. He also led the team with a season-high 10 rebounds. The Louisiana native's only previous double-double as a Chap was the very first game of the 2018-19 season, when he scored 16 and pulled down 10 rebounds in a win over Colorado School of Mines. For the season, Proctor is averaging 9.3 points per game on 44.4 percent shooting with 4.4 rebounds per game.

ROAD JOURNAL
When the Chaps take the court Thursday in Lawton, it will be the first time they have played a game away from home since their Lone Star Conference opener at Angelo State on November 23. LCU is 0-2 in true road games so far this year and 0-3 in games away from the Rip Griffin Center overall. The Chaps have scored just 56.7 points per game across those three contests while allowing 70.7 points from their opponents. Their closest game away from home was a 60-64 loss to Regis on a neutral court. Lloyd Daniels has been the team's leading scorer in three away games, averaging exactly 10.0 points per game.

CHARITY STRIPE
Although LCU has taken the second-fewest free throw attempts in the conference this season, they have done well to take advantage of the charity opportunities they have been given, shooting a league-best 76.7 percent on free throws. That percentage is also good enough to rank No. 36 in all of Division II. Silas Crisler (5-5) and Zach Stepp (2-2) are still perfect from the free throw line this season, while freshman Ty Caswell has missed just one (11-12).

SCOUTING THE AGGIES
  • Although ranking just eighth in the Lone Star Conference in rebounds per game with just 35.6 per game, the Aggies rank third in offensive boards with 12.6 per game
  • Former Dallas Mavericks and Alabama head basketball coach Avery Johnson originally transferred to Cameron out of New Mexico Junior College. He then left for Southern University, where he had a stellar senior season before beginning his professional basketball career
  • Brock Schreiner is the team's leading scorer with an average of 12.1 points per game. The sophomore guard's scoring output is twice what he did as a freshman in the 2018-19 season, when he scored just 6.7 points per game
  • Cameron finished last season with a 9-20 record, including a 5-13 showing in the Lone Star Conference. In this season's LSC preseason poll, they received 251 points and were picked to finish in 14th place
  • Kendall Scott leads the team in rebounding with 68 total boards (8.5 per game). He is third in the LSC in rebounds per game and fourth in total rebounds

THE SERIES WITH CAMERON
Lubbock Christian and Cameron first met in 1973, with the Aggies walking away victorious 78-61. CU then won each of the next eight contests as well before LCU finally earned a 68-65 win on January 23, 1995. The Chaps won again in February of 1995, before the two teams took a 20-year break before playing again in 2016, when Cameron won 79-76 in Lawton. LCU has won each of the last two matchups, both of which were in Lubbock.
