LCU Hosting Wayland Baptist To Complete Non-Conference Season Home-and-Home Series

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 25, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University closes a three-match homestand Monday inside Rip Griffin Center, stepping out of conference action to host former NAIA rival Wayland Baptist for LCU Faculty Appreciation Night. Opening serve for the non-conference match is 7 p.m.

- The rivalry between the Lady Chaps and Pioneers began in 1991. Monday's meeting is the second of the season and it closes out a season series, which renewed last season after a five-year absence. Monday's tilt is also the fifth meeting since the 2012 season. LCU has won 54 of the 65 contests, and LCU is 7-2 against the Pioneers over the last nine meetings, including a 3-0 LCU win Sept. 7 in Plainview, Texas earlier this season. LCU has won the prior four meetings in Lubbock, with the previous meeting in Lubbock resulting in a 3-1 LCU win on Jan. 19. WBU's last win over LCU was on Nov. 9, 2012 and their last win in Lubbock was on Oct. 12, 2010.  
- Last season, LCU opened the pushed-2020 season (played in Spring 2021) Jan. 19 with a 3-1 victory over WBU behind 16 kills from Avery Moore. While the match was LCU's season opener, the match was recorded as a scrimmage for Wayland Baptist. The two teams met earlier this season (Sept. 7) and LCU received a combined 23 kills from Hannah Froeschl (13) and Sage Chain (10).
- WBU has a 20-6 record on the season. They have won six of their prior seven matches, and are sitting second in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 13-3 conference record. The Pioneers, who are receiving top-25 national votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll, are 8-2 on the road this season.
- The Pioneers rank eighth in the NAIA in assists per set (13.18) and ninth in kills per set (13.89). Lucie Mahelov has 11.36 assists per set, which is seventh in the NAIA.
- Paxton Patterson leads the Pioneers with 3.12 kills per set and a hitting mark of .249 on the season. She is coming off a 13-kill performance in a 3-0 win over John Brown.
 
LADY CHAP NOTES
- LCU opened conference play with their best conference start since 2018 (6-0 start) and enter Monday's play 13-6 overall and 9-2 in conference, which has them tied for fourth in the LSC (with Texas Permian Basin). LCU rallied from a 2-1 match deficit for a 3-2 win Saturday over Texas A&M-Commerce, which ended the Lions eight-match conference win streak.
- Of the Lady Chaps six losses on the season, four are against nationally ranked programs.
- The Lady Chaps are 4-4 in non-conference matches this season. Aaliyah Gray leads LCU with 80 kills in non-conference matches, with a pace of 3.07 per set. Hannah Froeschel (76 kills) and Sage Chain (73 kills) each have provided balance at the net, combining for 44 kills, with Chain posting 24 total (0.8 per set). Leaders in non-conference play include Jalee Sims (7.5 assists per set) and Kendall Mahaney (4.4 digs per set and nine serving aces).
-Lubbock Christian is 5-1 in home matches this season, hitting .213 and holding the road teams to a .104 mark in attack percentage. Hannah Froeschl is hitting .310 with 2.52 kills per set at home. Jenna Lyons, coming off consecutive 15-kill performances at home, leads LCU at home with 56 kills, with Hannah Froeschl (53), Sage Chain (47) and Aaliyah Gray (41) providing balance on the attack. Lyons leads LCU at home with 3.11 kills per set. LCU has a 31-13 advantage in aces and a 52-36 advantage in blocks at home. Zoe Parker (10) and Chloe Menard (7) have combined for 17 aces in five home matches. Chain (23, 1.10 per set) and Froeschl (21, 1.0 per set) lead LCU in total blocks at home, with teammate Kaitlyn Mayo also averaging over a block a set with 1.00 (14 total blocks) per set average.
-LCU went 0-13 in the second set of matches played last season. This season, LCU has won the second set in 16 of their 19 matches (LCU is 12-4 when winning the second set). LCU is 12-0 when winning the opening set and 10-0 this season when winning the third set.  
-Last season, LCU had an attack percentage of .080, which ranked 16th in the LSC. This season, LCU is hitting .213 and ranks fourth in the LSC and 59th nationally. Hannah Froeschl leads LCU in hitting, ranking 11th in the LSC hitting .288. 
- Jalee Sims has 12 double-doubles over the past 15 matches (including the prior four matches), which has her with 23 in her LCU career (13 on the season). She ranks fourth in the LSC in assists (574) and is sixth in assists per set (8.3). She is coming off a career-high 54 assists for her first match with at least 50 assists in her LCU career. She enters Monday 54 assists away from hitting the 1,000 mark in her LCU career.
-LCU has averaged 12.0 team blocks over their prior three matches and they have at least 10 blocks in three consecutive matches for the first time since moving to NCAA Division II. Sage Chain is averaging six blocks per match in the span and is coming off a career-high nine-block outing against Texas A&M-Commerce, which is the best mark by a Lady Chaps member this season. Her total tied the most by a Lady Chaps member in a five-set match since 2008. Hannah Froeschl is third in the conference in blocks (70), with a pace of 1.01 per set, which ranks fourth in the conference (60th nationally). Chain is not far behind, ranking sixth in total blocks (63) and eighth in average blocks per set (0.91).
-With the combination of setter-play by Jalee Sims and Kayton Genenbacher, LCU ranks ninth in assists per set (11.42). LCU's hitting percentage of .213 ranks 59th nationally, which is their highest national ranking in an offensive category.
-The Lady Chaps rank fourth in the LSC in conference play in holding opponents to a hitting percentage of .136. LCU has held the opposition to a sub-.100 hitting percentage in four of their 11 LSC matches. Friday, they held UT Tyler, who entered the match ranked eighth nationally in hitting percentage, to a mark of .117, which was their lowest mark since the 2019 season.
- True freshman Kendall Mahaney ranks ninth in the LSC in digs per set (4.42) and seventh in total digs (305). She has seven matches with at least 20 digs on the season and her season and career-high mark is a 26-dig performance she recorded Saturday against TAMUC.
- LCU has limited their opponents to 60 aces this season, which plays out to 0.87 per set and ranks as the second-best mark in the LSC (behind Angelo State at 0.80). They have a mark of 0.77 (aces per set allowed by their opponents) in LSC matches, which leads the conference. They have held their opponents without an ace in two matches this season.
- The Lady Chaps have served up 78 aces on the season, with aces from 10 different Lady Chaps. Kendall Mahaney leads LCU with 15 serving aces (Zoe Parker has 14, Chloe Menard has 11 and Hannah Froeschl and Mady McCully each have 10). On the error side, LCU opponents have served 107 errors (1.55 per set), while LCU has produced 52 serving errors.
- Aaliyah Gray leads LCU in kills with 170 kills (19th in the LSC) and was the first Lady Chap to hit the 150-mark on the season. She has 2.74 per set, which has her 16th in the LSC.
