MATCH PREVIEW: Lady Chaps Close Regular Season in Alamo City

An LCU Win Combined By Angelo State and UT Tyler Losses Saturday Would Result in Regular Season LSC Title

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (November 13, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University closes out the regular season Saturday inside Bill Greehey Arena facing the team they opened the season with: St. Mary's. The difference this time around (Saturday at 2 p.m.) is this meeting is a Lone Star Conference meeting. If LCU garners a win and UT Tyler (at UT Permian Basin) and Angelo State (at St. Edward's) were to each lose, LCU would move into a three-way tie for the LSC regular season title.

- St. Mary's holds a 14-11 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1980. The Lady Chaps had a six-match win-streak against the Rattlers, until falling all three meetings during the 2017 season. LCU bounced back and had a three-match win streak until defeating LCU in the season opener in Oklahoma City (3-2 on Sept. 3). Despite the loss, LCU has won nine of the last 13 meetings in the series. The Lady Chaps are 4-2 all-time in San Antonio. The last meeting in San Antonio resulted in a 3-2 LCU win Nov. 8, 2019, which was a StMU home game hosted at Incarnate Word (LCU has won the last two matches played in the Alamo City). Four of the last seven meetings have resulted in five-set matches, including the prior two.  
- StMU went 2-10 last season (all in LSC play). Just as LCU closed last season falling in their last nine matches played, StMU closed out their season falling in their last 10 matches played. Preseason ranked No.15, they have bounced back to win 13 matches this season and are 13-10 overall, with a 7-9 conference mark. They are tied for 10th in the LSC.
- The Rattlers opened the week Friday hosting nationally ranked Angelo State, falling 3-1 to extend their losing streak to three matches.
- StMU ranks fourth in the LSC in digs with 1,603, which has them averaging 17.24 per set. Gabi Sandoval is third in the LSC in digs (417) and ranks eighth with an average of 4.48 digs per set.
- Alissa Tolbert ranks third the LSC in kills (316) and is 49th nationally with a conference leading 1013 total attacks on the season. Her rate of 3.4 kills per set is seventh in the LSC.
 
LADY CHAP NOTES
- LCU opened conference play with their best conference start since 2018 (6-0 start) and enter Saturday's play 19-6 overall and 14-2 in conference, which has them in third place in the LSC.

- The Lady Chaps have already clinched one of 12 berths to the LSC Championships, and with their 3-2 win over No.25 West Texas A&M last Saturday, LCU clinched one of four first-round byes.

- The NCAA released their second region rankings of the NCAA Division II South Central Region, and LCU moved up from the No.9 spot to the No.7 spot.

- Of the Lady Chaps six losses on the season, four are against nationally ranked programs. This past Saturday, the Lady Chaps faced a ranked opponent (No.25 West Texas A&M) for a fifth time this season, and produced a win to improve to 1-4 against AVCA Top-25 nationally ranked programs this season.

- The Lady Chaps have provided balance in conference play, as Aaliyah Gray (138), Hannah Froeschl (138), Jenna Lyons (134) and Sage Chain (132) each have over 130 kills in LSC play. Zoe Parker has 17 aces, Kendall Mahaney has 4.15 digs per set, Froeschl has 1.15 blocks per set and Jalee Sims has provided 9.32 assists per set in LSC contests. Froeschl leads the LSC in blocks in conference matches, with a mark of 69 (second in blocks per set at 1.15). LCU ranks second the LSC in conference matches, averaging 2.37 blocks per set (behind 2.4 by West Texas A&M).

- Lubbock Christian went 8-1 in home matches this season, hitting .221 and holding the road teams to a .137 mark in attack percentage. Hannah Froeschl hit .323 with 2.53 kills per set at home. Sage Chain led LCU at home with 88 kills, with Hannah Froeschl (86), Jenna Lyons (76) and Aaliyah Gray (62) providing balance on the attack. Lyons led LCU at home with 2.81 kills per set. LCU had a 43-31 advantage in aces and a 78-66 advantage in blocks at home. Zoe Parker (12) and Chloe Menard (11) combined for 23 aces in nine home matches. Chain (40, 1.18 per set) and Froeschl (30, 0.88 per set) led LCU in total blocks at home.

- LCU went 0-13 in the second set of matches played last season. This season, LCU has won the second set in 20 of their 25 matches (LCU is 16-4 when winning the second set). LCU is 13-0 when winning the opening set and 15-0 this season when winning the third set.  

- Last season, LCU had an attack percentage of .080, which ranked 16th in the LSC. This season, LCU is hitting .216 and ranks fifth in the LSC and 67th nationally. Hannah Froeschl leads LCU in hitting, ranking 12th in the LSC hitting .295. 

- Jalee Sims has 15 double-doubles over the past 21 matches, which has her with 26 in her LCU career (16 on the season). She ranks second in the LSC in assists (804) and is fifth in assists per set (8.74). She eclipsed the 1,000 mark in career assists at Western New Mexico (Oct. 28).

- LCU has 88 team blocks over the prior nine matches, which has them second in the LSC in total blocks (200) and in blocks per set (2.13 per set, ranking 44th nationally). Sage Chain is averaging 5.0 blocks per match in the span, including a career-high nine-block outing against Texas A&M-Commerce, which is the best mark by a Lady Chaps member this season. She is second on the squad and is third in the LSC with 91 blocks (fourth in blocks per set 0.97). Hannah Froeschl leads LCU in blocks (93, second in LSC) and is second in blocks per set (.99).

- The Lone Star Conference announced their volleyball weekly honors and Sage Chain received Offensive Player of the Week accolades for matches played November 2-8. Chain opened the week with 11 kills and 8.0 blocks for a team-leading 16 points in their win over ENMU. She followed against WT with 19 kills and five blocks (three solo) for 23 points. Chain had the final two kills in the fifth set, for a 15-13 set win to claim the match and the upset win. Her weekly totals included 30 kills, 13 blocks, 39 points, and a .338 hitting percentage, while averaging 3.33 kills, 1.44 blocks and 4.33 points per set. The honor is the first for Chain. She is the first Lady Chaps member ever honored for an Offensive Player of the Week honor by the LSC, which is the second weekly honoree this season and the third overall all-time. Hannah Froesch received Defensive Player of the Week honors by the LSC Sept. 21, and it was the first time the LSC had issued a Lady Chap with a weekly honor since Morgan Schwarz received the defensive honor Oct. 29, 2019, which was the first time LCU received a weekly honor issued by the LSC.

-With the combination of setter-play by Jalee Sims and Kayton Genenbacher, LCU ranks seventh in the conference assists per set (11.47).

-The Lady Chaps rank third in the LSC in conference play in holding opponents to a hitting percentage of .149. LCU has held the opposition to a sub-.100 hitting percentage in five of their 16 LSC matches.

- True freshman Kendall Mahaney ranks 11th in the LSC in digs per set (4.26) and fifth in total digs (400). She has eight matches with at least 20 digs on the season and her season and career-high mark is a 26-dig performance she recorded against Texas A&M-Commerce.

- LCU has limited their opponents to 93 aces this season, which plays out to 0.99 per set and ranks as the second-best mark in the LSC (behind Angelo State at 0.82). They have a mark of 0.98 (aces per set allowed by their opponents) in LSC matches, which is second in the conference. They have held their opponents without an ace in two matches this season.

- The Lady Chaps have served up 99 aces on the season, with aces from 10 different Lady Chaps. Chloe Menard leads LCU with 19 aces, with Zoe Parker and Kendall Mahaney each with 18, and Hannah Froeschl (14) not far behind. Mady McCully is also in double figures in ace (11). On the error side, LCU opponents have served 132 errors (1.40 per set), while LCU has produced 73 serving errors.

- Aaliyah Gray leads LCU in kills per set with a rate of 2.67 per set, which has her 19th in the LSC in the category. Jenna Lyons follows her, 21st in the LSC, with a rate of 2.51 per set. Gray and Froeschl co-lead LCU with 227 kills on the season.
