It All Comes Down To This... LCU's Postseason Fate To Be Determined

| By:

LCU Enters Friday in 10th Place and Needs to Be In Eighth By Saturday's End

SILVER CITY, N.M. (November 11, 2023) – As Lubbock Christian University steps on the Drag's Court floor in preparation of their 7 p.m. (Central) match against Western New Mexico, they will know their postseason fate. Going from their 3-1 Wednesday win over Eastern New Mexico into Saturday night's contest almost every other Lone Star Conference squad will have played two matches in the span, and LCU's match is the final LSC regular season contest. It could be a meaningless match if Texas A&M International defeats West Texas A&M Saturday, but if WT wins, then LCU's match at WNMU will be a must-win match for the Lady Chaps (they enter Saturday in ninth place in the LSC standings and the top eight advance to LSC Championships).

POSTSEASON SCENARIO
For LCU (8-7 in LSC play) to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Championships (top eight teams earn berths), LCU (moved into ninth place Friday) has these scenarios, as they have on regular season matches remaining:

- If LCU wins Saturday, they need the following to take place (in advance of their match):
  • Texas A&M International (9-6, currently in eighth place) has to lose Saturday against West Texas A&M (match is in Laredo, Texas)
The Lady Chaparrals would not advance if they lose.

LCU has the tie-breaker over both UT Permian Basin and TAMIU, including the tie-breaker in a three-way scenario (all three times are mathematically eligible for the final berth). The Lady Chaps match at WNMU is the last scheduled regular season match scheduled by the LSC. All prior LSC matches will be completed, leaving LCU knowing their fate entering the match (hopefully that point has been covered).

LOOKING AT WESTERN NEW MEXICO
- LCU and Western New Mexico are meeting for the 15th time all-time, marking the fifth meeting as conference foes. LCU has won the prior six meetings, which have been since 1996 (last four meetings have been since 2009). The all-time series is tied 7-7 (the series goes back to 1986). LCU is 2-1 all-time in Silver City, with Sept. 10, 1993 (2-0 WNMU) marking LCU's only visit prior to the 2019 season. The Lady Chaps have won their prior two trips to Silver City, including a 3-0 win in their prior visit (Oct. 28, 2021).

- WNMU was preseason picked 16th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll. The Mustangs went 3-25 last season, which included a 1-15 record conference play. They went 1-11 at home and 0-10 on the road.

- Western is 6-20 this season and they have a 2-13 record in the LSC. They opened the weekend Friday night at home, falling to Eastern New Mexico in five sets (3-2).

- Mustangs setter Letícia Correa ranks fourth in the LSC in assists per set with a rate of 7.54 per set. Her total of 671 assists ranks fifth in the LSC. Her season-high is 48 in a match, which has been completed twice (had 47 Friday against ENMU).

- Correa's target is Jazmyne Walker, who is fifth in the LSC with 938 attacks on the season (10.1 per set). Walker ranks eighth in the LSC with 29 kills, with a season-high mark of 29 notched against St. Mary's (Oct. 13).

LADY CHAP NOTES
- LCU was one of 13 unbeaten teams this season before falling 3-2 Sept.14 to UT Permian Basin. The season start was their best since opening 2010 with an 8-0 record. The loss also ended an eight-match win streak if you include their season-ending win last season (their longest under head coach Keith Giboney and the longest streak since a 12-match win streak in 2018). The Lady Chaps went into conference play with an 8-2 record on the season and their pre-conference record was their best 10-match start to their season since opening the first 10 matches of the 2014 season with a 9-1 record. They are 8-7 in LSC play (10th in the standings) and have won eight of their last 12 matches. They enter the contest 16-9 overall (they surpassed last season's 11-win season win total) following a 3-1 win over Eastern New Mexico Wednesday.

- Kalli Dalland had a match-high and career-high 10 blocks in Oct. 14's win over UT Permian Basin. The mark was the highest total in the rally scoring era by a Lady Chaps member at home and matches as the highest single-match total since 2008 by a Lady Chap (Dalland is the third Lady Chaps member to complete the task). Dalland is sixth in the LSC and is 21st nationally in total blocks (108) and is fourth with a pace of 1.1 per set (33rd nationally).

- Kayton Genenbacher has 13 double-doubles this season (24 in career) and enters Saturday third in the LSC in assists (958, 35th nationally) and fifth in aces (38) while ranking third in assists per set (9.98, 40th nationally). Her assists are fueling a Lady Chaps offense that rank seventh in the LSC in kills per set (13.0) and is hitting .212 on the season (seventh in the LSC). Genenbacher surpassed 2,000 career assists Wednesday, marking her as the 12th player in program history to achieve the honor. Bradi Marshall was the last Lady Chaps member to complete the task (completed during the 2019 season).

- Kiana Fallaha ranks seventh in the LSC in kills per set (3.4) and fith in kills (326). She is eighth in the LSC in points per set with 3.7. Fallaha is sixth in the LSC (46th nationally) with a pace of 10.5 attacks per set and has produced over 40 attacks in 13 matches this season. Wednesday, she notched her 12th double-double of the season (and of her career) and she has double-double performances in eight of her last 16 matches.

- LCU ranks 10th in the LSC (74th nationally) in digs per set (16.4), and it has been a balanced effort, as the Lady Chaps do not have any representation in the top-15 in conference leaders in digs. Chloe Menard is LCU's leader with 3.51 digs per set, as she has 333 total digs on the season. Four Lady Chaps (Menard, Genenbacher, Olivia Elofsson and Fallaha) have at least 2.6 digs per set.

- Lubbock Christian is 5-3 in true road matches this season, with their most recent road match resulting in a 3-0 LCU loss at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas on Oct. 25. LCU has 414 kills on the road, with Kiana Fallaha averaging 3.33 kills per set. She averages 3.7 points per set in road matches. Chloe Menard averages 3.5 digs per set (leads team) and has nine aces in road matches (even with Olivia Elofsson) behind 12 from Kayton Genenbacher. Kalli Dalland has 31 blocks and averages 0.94 per set on the road. Genenbacher has an average of 9.9 assists per set in 33 road sets played.

- Kiana Fallaha (3.1) and Lily Bickley (2.8) are leading LCU in LSC play in kills per set. Fallaha, ranking 12th with 3.4 points per set, and Bickley, ranking 23rd with 3.1 points per set, have LCU with two players in the top-25 in conference in points per set. Chloe Menard leads LCU with 3.4 digs per set and ranks tied for 26th in the LSC with 14 aces. Kayton Genenbacher, leading the conference in LSC play with 624 assists and third in assists per set (10.23), leads LCU and is fifth in the conference in LSC play in aces with 21 (also ranks 13th with 0.34 per set). Lily Bickley leads LCU in LSC play in hitting percentage at .325 (12th in LSC). Mix in Lacie Schooley ranking 19th in hitting percentage (.297) and Kalli Dalland ranking 29th (.253), it has LCU with three players in the top-30 in the conference for hitting (in LSC matches).
