No. 20 Lady Chaps Roll Past UT Dallas in Lone Star Conference Debut Showdown

Chappell Posts Double-Double as LCU Never Trails in 68–44 Road Victory

RICHARDSON, Texas (February 5, 2026) — No. 20 Lubbock Christian never trailed and controlled the game from the opening tip Thursday, cruising past UT Dallas 68–44 in a Lone Star Conference women's basketball matchup at the UTD Activity Center. The contest marked the first-ever meeting between the programs, as the Comets are in their first season in the LSC while transitioning from Division III.

Lubbock Christian (18–4, 10–3 LSC) jumped out to an 11–0 lead and held UT Dallas scoreless for more than six minutes to set the tone. The Lady Chaps led 16–10 after one quarter and then put the game firmly out of reach by outscoring the Comets 19–7 in the second period, taking a 35–17 halftime advantage. LCU shot 64.3 percent from the field in the second quarter and owned an 18–2 edge in points in the paint during the frame.

Kennedy Chappell, a Heath, Texas native, recorded her third double-double of the season and of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds to pace a balanced Lubbock Christian attack. The junior added three assists, a steal and a block while posting a team-best plus-32 plus/minus. Meg Meekins followed with 14 points, including three three-pointers, marking her 16th double-figure scoring effort of the season. Raegan Lee and Kimber Mathews each scored seven points, while LCU received 29 bench points and saw 10 different players score in the first half.

The Lady Chaps continued to apply pressure after halftime, holding UT Dallas to 31 points through three quarters and pushing the lead to as many as 28 in the fourth. LCU finished the night shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three-point range, while limiting the Comets to just 26.2 percent shooting — the lowest mark by any LCU opponent this season.

UT Dallas (9–10, 6–6 LSC) was led by Umi Otsuka, who scored 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting and added three assists. Anna Yellen contributed seven points, while Sheridan Kavanagh and Addy Self had six and five points, respectively. The Comets struggled offensively early, shooting just 2-of-13 in the second quarter, but outscored LCU 14–13 in the third and 13–16 in the fourth as they attempted to chip away.

The victory improved Lubbock Christian to 8–3 in true road games this season and extended its streak of consecutive wins by at least 20 points to three, the program's longest such stretch since the 2021–22 campaign.

How It Happened
The game began with Lubbock Christian opening the game on an 11-0 run, highlighted by Tia Johnson's three-pointer, assisted by Kennedy Chappell, just over a minute into play. UTD responded with Sheridan Kavanagh's three-point play at 3:47 to narrow the gap to 11-3. Despite a late surge from Umi Otsuka, contributing four points near the end of the quarter, the Lady Chaps held a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chappell and Tia Johnson each had five points in the frame to co-lead LCU.

The Lady Chaps dominated the second quarter, outscoring UTD 19-7. Meg Meekins and Chappell fueled the offense early with a layup and an assist combination at 9:13. The visiting team extended their lead with contributions from multiple players, including a layup by Ally Ihler at 6:57, assisted by Kyndle Cunningham. UTD struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just 2-of-13 from the field (15.4%), while LCU was 64.3% from the field (9/14). The quarter concluded with Maddie Dollar adding a layup with 44 seconds remaining, giving LCU a 68-44 halftime lead. LCU, outscoring UTD 18-2 in the paint during the period, was led in the period by Raegan Lee, who had five points. Chappell had seven points in the first half to lead LCU, as their balance scoring was on display with 10 players with at least a point in the half.

In the third quarter, Meekins led the Lady Chaps with a strong performance, scoring two consecutive three-pointers early in the quarter, assisted both times by Martie McCoy. Lubbock Christian capitalized on turnovers, with Johnson making an early steal that contributed to their momentum. Despite UTD's efforts, including a three-pointer by Otsuka at 7:07, the Lady Chaps maintained their lead. The visiting team concluded the quarter leading 52-31, bolstered by Meekins' nine points in the frame.

In the fourth quarter, the Chaparrals maintained their lead with a series of successful plays. Chappell opened the quarter with a layup at 9:48, assisted by McCoy, setting the tone for the Lady Chaps' offense. Meekins followed with a three-pointer at 9:19, extending their lead to 57-34. UTD responded with a three-pointer by Otsuka at 9:31, but the Chaps' defense, including blocks by McCoy and Dollar, kept the home team at bay. The Chaps secured the quarter with a 16-13 score, solidifying their victory. Kimber Mathews led LCU in the period with five points. Meekins finished the half with 12 points.
