LUBBOCK, Texas (October 25, 2018) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals return home for a four-match homestand to close out the regular season. LCU can clinch their first regular season Heartland Conference title this week. Several factors are in play, but if LCU defeats Texas A&M International (hosting Thursday at 7 p.m.) and St. Mary's (hosting noon Saturday), then the worst case scenario is LCU claims at least a share of the regular season title and the No.1-seed for the Heartland Conference Tournament (LCU would host).
TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL | Thu., Oct. 25 | 7 p.m.
- The Lady Chaps are a perfect 14-0 against the Dustdevils all-time. Ten of the 14 victories have come in 3-0 sweeps for LCU.
- TAMIU has dropped their last two matches and will take a 5-18 record into Thursday's match against LCU. The Dustdevils have a 3-6 mark in Heartland play after a 3-0 loss Tuesday to St. Mary's. The Heartland Conference Preseason Poll slated TAMIU last (seventh) and they are currently in sixth and battling for one of the final spots in the conference tournament.
- The Dustdevils best category on the conference statistical leaderboard is serving aces, entering the week ranking third in the conference in aces per set (1.26).
- TAMIU is 2-3 on the road this season. They have not played on the road since a 3-2 win on Oct. 6 at Newman. Their last five matches have been at home.
- Lacy Asdourian leads the Dustdevils in digs (370) and digs per set (4.35), with marks that each rank fourth in the conference.
GAME NOTES
- Lubbock Christian takes a 17-7 record into the contest and they are 5-2 in home games this season. LCU has won their last six home matches.
- LCU is 7-1 in conference play this season. LCU maintained a one-match lead in the Heartland Conference standings with a 3-2 win at Dallas Baptist Saturday (St. Mary's is 7-2). LCU's conference record of 7-1 is their best eight-match start in Heartland Conference play since a 7-1 record through eight matches to begin their 2014 Heartland Conference schedule (they went 9-1 through the first 10 games of conference play in 2014).
- LCU's 3-2 win Saturday at DBU came when facing a 2-0 deficit. The last time LCU rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to win a match 3-2 was on Oct. 21, 2017 at home against Arkansas - Fort Smith, and the last time LCU completed the task on the road was Sept. 28, 2012 at Oklahoma City.
- Serving aces has developed into an intriguing story this season. The Lady Chaps have experienced the highs (13 aces Sept. 14 vs. Newman and on Sept. 22 vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State, which tied a program single-match high under head coach
Jennifer Lawrence) and lows (0 against Southwestern Okla. State on Sept. 6) from the serving line this season. Aces per set (1.51) and total aces (124) are the only team statistical category LCU leads in the Heartland Conference.
Maddie DeGuire leads the conference in aces per set with 0.45 (36
th nationally). DeGuire leads the Heartland and is 52
nd nationally with 36 aces this season.
Bradi Marshall had eight aces Saturday, marking the most by a Lady Chap in the 15 years
Jennifer Lawrence has served as head coach. Since 2006, the prior single-match high for a Lady Chaps member in aces was six (done twice this season by DeGuire). The mark matches the highest total in a five-set match in NCAA Division II play this season and ties as the 10th highest single-match total in Heartland Conference history.
- Marshall leads the Heartland Conference and ranks 31
st nationally with a conference-leading 10.78 assists per set, which ranks sixth nationally among all freshmen. Marshall leads the team in double-doubles this season with 11, with double-doubles in six of eight conference matches played.
-
Kelsie French leads the Heartland Conference in digs per set (6.19) and enters Thursday ranking 11th nationally in the category. French is 45
th nationally in total digs (477) and her career mark of 2,446 ranks third among NCAA Division II active career leaders.
-
Lauren Zoller leads the Heartland Conference in kills per set (3.38) and is second in points per set (3.81). Her rate in conference play in kills per set is 3.46.
- Lubbock Christian University's
Ashley Vanfleet (Offensive Player of the Week) and
Bradi Marshall (Setter of the Week) each picked up Heartland Conference weekly volleyball honors. The awards were given for matches played from Oct. 15 - Oct. 21.
Vanfleet led LCU on the week with 30 kills (3.75 per set) and 31.5 points. She produced her 30 kills on a .310 attack percentage. Vanfleet produced 11 kills against St. Edward's and followed with a career high 19 kills at Dallas Baptist in a five-set win. She also had eight digs and three blocks on the week. This is Vanfleet's first career weekly award.
Marshall had another tremendous week with 87 assists, 10.88 per set, 26 digs and eight aces with a pair of double-double performances during a 1-1 week for the Lady Chaps. She opened with a double-double at St. Edward's with 37 assists and 15 digs and nearly recorded a triple-double at DBU with 50 assists, 11 digs and eight aces. This is Marshall's fourth weekly award this season and her third-straight award.
