LCU Looking for Sixth Straight Win

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN (8-4, 5-2, 2-1) vs.
ANGELO STATE (9-2, 5-2, 3-0)
Saturday, January 11 – 3 p.m.
Rip Griffin Center – Lubbock, Texas

WIN STREAK
Lubbock Christian is currently riding a five-game win streak, which is their longest consecutive number of wins since they also won five straight since February 17 to March 3 of 2017.  They have just one loss in the last eight games, which came in triple-overtime against Dallas Baptist, who was ranked No. 19 at the time. The current win streak began on December 14 against Tarleton State. In the five wins. LCU has averaged 79.2 points per game on 48.8 percent shooting. Conversely, opponents are shooting 43.3 percent during the streak and averaging just 67.0 points per game. Rashaan Proctor has led the Chaps during the five-stretch with 14.0 points per game but is joined by four other teammates averaging double-figures. If the Chaps win on Saturday, it will be their first six-game win streak since they won seven in a row from Jan. 25 to Feb. 15 of 2014.

NO PLACE LIKE…
Saturday's matchup with Angelo State will be the eighth of 14 scheduled games at home for LCU during the 2019-20 season. They have a 6-1 record on their home court so far this season, having lost to DBU last on December 5. LCU is averaging 83.6 pints per game and holding opponents to 65.1 points per game at home this year. The Rip Griffin Center, where LCU plays its home games, was named after B.R. "Rip" Griffin, a former secretary of the LCU Board of Trustees, whose generous donation of $500,000, made possible the $4,200,000, 51,500 square foot facility. Officially dedicated on October 9, 2000, the arena seats 1,950 people for sporting events. The Chaps went 13-1 on their home court last season, and they have not posted a losing record at home since the 2006-07 season.

SHARP-SHOOTING CHAPS
After hitting 17 and 13 three-pointers in their two games last week, Lubbock Christian has moved up to first in the Lone Star Conference and No. 19 nationally in three-point field goal percentage (.400).  LCU has attempted 290 three-pointers on the year, making 116 of them. Freshman Ty Caswell currently ranks No. 2 nationally and leads the Lone Star Conference in three-point efficiency, having made 31 on 59 attempts (52.5 percent). Three different Chap players have made six three-pointers in a single game this season, including Parker Hicks (11/29 vs. USW), Silas Crisler (11/30 vs. OPSU) and, most recently, Cameron Copley (1/2 vs. WNMU).

CHARITY STRIPE
Although LCU has taken the third-fewest free throw attempts in the conference this season, they have done well to take advantage of the charity opportunities they have been given, shooting a league-best 78.9 percent on free throws. That percentage is also good enough to rank No. 16 in all of Division II. Silas Crisler leads LCU at the line among players with at least 10 attempts, hitting 14 of his 15 foul shots for a .933 percentage. Lloyd Daniels, who has taken the most free throw attempts on the team with 33, is shooting 75.8 percent from the line.

FAIR OR FOUL
The Chaps have committed only 185 fouls this season, which is the 15th lowest mark among 303 Division II teams and the lowest mark in the Lone Star Conference. Averaging close to 15 personal fouls per game, LCU's season-high in the category is 20, which they set on 11/14 against Randall and matched in their most recent game against UTPB. Of the Lubbock Christian players averaging at least 20 minutes per game, Lloyd Daniels has committed the fewest fouls with just 14. The Chaps had 17 personal fouls in their matchup earlier this season with Angelo State.

FRESH OUT OF THE OVEN
Lubbock Christian this season has been excellent at forcing turnovers on defense and almost equally as good at not turning the ball over on offense. The Chaps for an average of 17.5 turnovers per game, which is the 19th most in the nation. Conversely, LCU only turns the ball over 13.0 times per game, and their turnover margin of 4.5 also ranks No. 19 nationally. Daniels leads the team in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1, which also ranks second in the Lone Star Conference.

NEW-LOOK CHAPS
After losing their two leading scorers from a season ago, Lubbock Christian brought in a number of new faces to help the offense reload. So far this season, 53.5 percent (40 .6 points per game) of the Chaps' scoring is coming from players who were not on the team a season ago. Lloyd Daniels leads the group of newcomers with a team-high 12.8 points per game and is shooting .541, which is the third-best mark in the LSC. Freshman Ty Caswell is also averaging double figures at 10.6 points per game, while Texas Tech transfer Parker Hicks is scoring 10.3 per game and leading the team with 6.4 rebounds per game. Aamer Muhammad and Joshua Davey have also contributed off the bench.

SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
  • The school was originally a junior college founded in 1928 as San Angelo College, moving to senior college status in 1965. The Rams were the 1957 National Junior College Athletic Association National Champions
  • Angelo State is led by head coach Patrick "Cinco" Boone V, who took control of the Ram program in 2015 after serving as an assistant coach to Chris Beard there for two seasons. He is 90-41 in four-plus seasons with two appearances in the NCAA South Central Regional
  • Ram forward Andres Ibarguen currently leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks No. 46 nationally in rebounds per game with 8.9. Almost half of his boards come on the offensive glass, with 4.09 per game.
  • All five of ASU's projected starters average at least 10 points per game so far this season. Guard Collin Turner leads the way with 16.7 points per game, while forward Ronald Bell is close behind with 16.6 per game
  • Angelo State has won each of its last three games, defeating Cameron, UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico in the process. Their last loss came on the road at Midwestern State by a score of 80-74 on December 19

THE SERIES WITH THE RAMS
Lubbock Christian and Angelo State have faced off a total of 27 times since 1970, with the Rams holding a 21-6 advantage all-time. ASU won the first nine meetings between the two teams before LCU finally won 71-61 in 1979. The only back-to-back wins for the Chaps came in 1982 when they beat the Rams 66-58 and 75-62 within about a two-week span during the season. The series has been more even since Duncan took over as the head coach of the Chaps, with the ninth-year LCU coach holding a 2-2 record against ASU. The Rams won the first matchup earlier this season by a score of 73-63. If junior college games between the two teams are counted, Angelo State would have an addition seven wins and a 28-6 all-time advantage.
