SAN ANGELO, Texas (November 24, 2014) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals head to the Concho Valley Monday evening for a 7 p.m. non-conference road tip against Angelo State University.
The Lady Chaps are coming off an 87-68 win over Mid-America Christian Saturday in their home opener to improve to 2-1 on the young season. LCU's win improved them to 11-1 in home openers under head coach
Steve Gomez. LCU had five players in double figures in the game, with
Haley Burton leading the team with 15 points and seven assists.
Kellyn Schneider led LCU defensively with 16 rebounds and eight blocks. The eight blocks matched a program single game record, last completed by Suzanne Copeland on Feb. 12, 1991. LCU totaled 14 blocks as a team, which was the most under the 12-year coaching reign of Gomez.
Burton leads the LCU offense with 19.3 points per game. She has knocked down 11 three-pointers and is averaging 6.3 assists per game. She is joined by
Haley Fowler (12.3),
Tess Bruffey (11.3) and
Bailey Haist (10.7) as Lady Chaps averaging double figures in points. Schneider is averaging 11.3 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game.
LCU's game against MACU Saturday was the first of a 10-game stretch in which LCU will have seven home games. Monday marks the first of three road games during the stretch.
ABOUT ASUThe Rambelles are seeking their first win of the season. ASU is 0-3 on the season, with two of their losses coming to Heartland Conference schools (St. Mary's and UTPB). They are 0-1 at home this season. Jasmine Caston opened the season with 23 points against St. Mary's and leads ASU with 15.3 points a game. ASU is scoring 60.0 points per game and allowing 69.3 through three games. As a team, the Belles are shooting 40.5-percent and 72.5-percent from the free throw line. ASU will look to limit turnovers, as they allow 22.7 per game.
THE SERIES AGAINST ASULCU leads the series with a 6-3 all-time mark. The last regular season meeting was on Nov. 6, 2012 in San Angelo. LCU won the game 83-65, in a game that was a regular season game for LCU, but an exhibition game for ASU. Prior to that meeting, the teams had not played since Nov. 30, 2001, with LCU winning 78-75 in overtime in San Angelo. The last ASU win in the series was a 62-56 ASU victory on Dec. 29, 2000.

No. 1 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps stepped up in the second half with a 49-34 scoring edge in the half to defeat Angelo State University 83-65 inside Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Lady Chaps went back and forth with the Belles in the first 24 minutes of the game. With 16:13 remaining and the game tied at 38-38, the Lady Chaps were sparked by a pair of jumpers from
Nicole Hampton for a 42-38 lead. The Rambelles tied the game again at 44-44 with 14:52 left in regulation, but LCU responded with n a 13-2 run to build their largest lead of the game at 46-57. The Lady Chaps would keep the pressure on and eventually build a 21-point lead before the Belles made one last run pulling within 14 points on the deficit. The Lady Chaps made their final push and brought the final lead to 18 points.
Haley Burton led Lubbock Christian with 23 points, while
Nicole Hampton scored 18 points. Hampton also contributed seven steals, six assists and six rebounds.
Kelsey Hoppel supplied 12 points and Emily Atkins tallied 11 points. LCU made 11 3-pointers in the game on 25 attempts (44-percent) and shot 52.5 percent from the floor. ASU was held to a 41.0 percentage from the floor and were 6 for 18 from beyond the arc. Each team pulled down 35 total rebounds in the contest.
