Lady Chaps victorious at DBU in threeDALLAS, Texas (September 20, 2014) – The Lady Chaps were in and out of the Burg Center quickly on Saturday afternoon, sweeping Dallas Baptist in three sets behind 18 kills from
Maddie Johnson and a double-double by
Channing Castleberry in front of a favorable Lubbock Christian crowd on the road.
The Lady Chap victory marked the fifth time in the eight games this season that LCU (7-1, 5-1 Heartland) has blanked its opponents in just three games. The LCU hitters were very efficient against the Patriots (4-5, 2-3 Heartland), accumulating a season-low eight attack errors while hitting .368 for the match, more than double of DBU's .149.
Johnson was one kill short of her career-high, and Castleberry notched her second match of double-digit kills (12) and digs (16) with many Lubbock Christian supporters on hand, including players' families, LCU alumni and President Tim Perrin.
The Lady Chaps wasted little time in avenging last season's loss to the Patriots, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, emphasized by a Johnson kill that froze the DBU defenders. The Patriots reeled off the next three points to slice the margin in half until a crafty left-handed kill by Castleberry moments later doubled up DBU at 8-4.
Samantha Matthews increased the gap to 14-9 on a quick set from
Erin Fisher, and the Lady Chaps finished off the set with a 7-1 run for the 25-14 triumph.
Set two was much more evenly matched with the scored tied at 10-10 when
Malori Maddox recorded a service ace and Castleberry tallied a pair of kills for a three-point LCU advantage, but four quick points by the Patriots put DBU on top. The Lady Chaps paced their way to a 23-19 lead before Johnson and Castleberry finished off the set with two big kills and a 25-22 victory.
Amy Edwards joined up with Johnson for a block on the first play of set three and the middle blocker then put the Lady Chaps on the board with a kill. DBU's Tiara Gipson shot a kill over Matthews followed by a patronizing look to pull DBU to within 6-4, but on the next play, Fisher sized Gipson up and emphatically denied her attack attempt and then directed a four-point Lady Chap run from behind the serving line. With LCU leading 17-10, the setter caught the Patriots off guard by sending the ball over on the second touch to gain another Lady Chap point. DBU was unable to recover from the deficit, surrendering the game and match at 25-13.
Fisher handed out a game-high 41 assists, and libero
Christa Daniel tallied a game-high 21 digs. For DBU, Gipson had 11 kills.
