All-Time Series: OC leads 29-17
The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps look to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season Saturday, as they complete their first conference road trip facing Oklahoma Christian University.
The Lady Chaps, 8-5 overall, fell to 2-1 in conference play Thursday with a 52-46 loss at Newman University. It ended LCU's 25-game conference win streak and it was their first Heartland Conference loss in program history. LCU received a career high 10 rebounds from
Haley Burton and 11 points from
Allison Szabo, but could not overcome 23 turnovers, a 29.4% (5/17) free-throw percentage and an offensive output of 46 points. The shooting percentage was the lowest in head coach
Steve Gomez's coaching tenure with LCU and the points was the lowest produced in a game since Nov. 5, 2011.
LCU is realizing the importance of
Haley Fowler to the line-up. The forward is LCU's leading scorer, averaging 13.3 points a contest, but has been sidelined with a hand injury. LCU is 0-2 with her out of the line-up. The Lady Chaps, 2-3 over the past five games, will be seeking to minimize their turnovers. They are averaging 19 turnovers a game over their past five games (their opponents are averaging 13.2 over the same stretch). LCU has been able to improve their rebounding over the past four games. They have out-rebounded their opponents over the past four games and in every conference game. They had only out-rebounded the opposition twice prior to the current stretch.
The Lady Chaps will seek to end a two game losing streak Saturday and improve on a 3-2 road record. The consecutive losses for LCU is the most since falling to Azusa Pacific and Westmont on Nov. 17-19, 2011. They are aiming to avoid their first three-game losing streak since the final two games of the 2009-2010 season and the season opening loss of the 2010-2011 season.
ABOUT OCThe Lady Eagles, like Newman, picked up their first conference win Thursday. They defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State 86-47, with 23 points from McKenzie Stanford. OC enters the game 4-9 overall and they are 1-4 in conference play. They are 4-5 at home and their Thursday home win was their first against a NCAA Div. II program. Their three prior wins on the season were against NAIA programs. A bright note on the season has been the play of Stanford, who enters the week third in the Heartland Conference with a scoring pace of 16.8 points per game (enters the game averaging 17.2).
THE SERIES AGAINST OCOC leads the all-time series 29-17 dating back to 1979. Despite trailing the all-time series, LCU has won 13 of the last 16 meetings. LCU made a program record 16 three-pointers in the win. The last meeting in Oklahoma City (Dec. 14, 2013) resulted in a 79-59 LCU win.
THE LAST MEETING AGAINST OCFeb. 8, 2014 (Lubbock, Texas) - LCU: 108 / OC 79
Emily Pool tallied 20 points in the first half and Lubbock Christian University used a program single-game record 16 three-pointers to register a program single-game record for points in a conference game, as LCU extended their win streak to a program record 18 games in a 108-79 Heartland Conference victory over Oklahoma Christian University Saturday inside Rip Griffin Center.
LCU never trailed in the game and exploded with 66 first half points. Oklahoma Christian went the opening 3:38 without a field goal and made only one of their first 10 shot attempts. Meanwhile Pool supplied LCU their opening nine points for a 9-0 lead. Pool was 7-of-8 from the field in the half for her 20 first half points. Her and teammate
Kelsey Hoppel each went 4-of-4 from three-point range to combine for an 8-of-8 shooting performance behind the arc in the half alone. LCU produced 12 three-pointers in the half on a 12-of-20 (60%) display from long range. They were 60.5% (23/38) from the field overall in the half. Freshman

LCU also had a 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers (turnovers were 14-3 in LCU's favor at the break) before the break.
Once building the LCU lead to 34 points 11 seconds into the second half (68-34), the Lady Chaps went with their bench. The Lady Chaps starting unit averaged only eight minutes of playing time in the second half (averaged 13 minutes in the opening half).
Allison Szabo hit a three-pointer for an 82-50 lead nearly seven minutes into the half to match the program single-game three-point shooting record (15), and on the next possession,
Haley Fowler set the record with the team's 16th trey of the game. Hoppel was 5-of-5 from three-point range in the game and is the first Lady Chaps player to remain perfect with at least five three-point attempts on the Rip Griffin Center floor. The prior best was by Ginger Armacost, who went 7-of-8 against Wayland Baptist on Jan. 8, 2001.
The Lady Chaps completed the game 59.3% (16/27) from long distance and 51.5% (35/68) overall. The season-best 59.3% from the perimeter was their best shooting performance from long range since shooting 64.3% (9/14) on Nov. 16, 2012 at Metro State. Pool finished the game 9-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range for a season-high 25 points. It was her first 20-point-plus performance of the season and the 17th of her LCU career.
Pool's five three-pointers provide her with 164 career three-pointers and she moves into fifth place in LCU's all-time record books for career three-point field goals. She passed Brandi Grider, who had 159 three-pointers from 1995-99.
Along with 25 points from Pool, LCU also received 15 points from Hoppel, a career-high 14 points from
Hannah Harbin, 13 points from Fowler and 11 points from
Kaycie Boyles. Starters Hoppel (5-of-5), Pool (9-of-12) and Boyles (4-of-6) combined to shoot 78.3% (18/23) from the field. LCU out-scored OC 32-24 in the paint and 28-10 in points off turnovers. OC did have the upper hand in rebounds, with a 50-39 advantage in the category. It was the most rebounds an LCU squad has allowed since Oklahoma City had 51 rebounds on Jan.5, 2009. LCU has only been out-rebounded four times in 21 games this season. OC was led offensively by Sydney Hill, who had 18 points (nine from the free-throw line). They also received 12 points from Logan McKee.
The 108 points was a program best for a conference game, topping the prior high of 104, which came on Jan. 4 against Texas A&M International. Speaking of 100 points, the Lady Chaps topped 100 points for a second consecutive game against OC in Lubbock.
