HOMEWARD BOUNDLubbock Christian University opened their season last weekend in Golden, Colo. and split the opening week of play going 1-1. They come home for their home opener Saturday against Mid-America Christian University and then will follow Monday playing at Angelo State University before hitting the Thanksgiving Break.
LOOKING BACK AT THE LAST GAMELCU was able to overcome a cold shooting performance and
Haley Fowler produced her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to help LCU claim their first victory of the season with a 65-62 win over Colorado School of Mines Saturday night (Nov. 15) at Lockridge Arena.
The Lady Chaps led 33-26 at the half and led as much as nine points (41-32) in the second half before CSM rallied back. The Orediggers were able to rally to tie the game at 51-51 with less than seven minutes to go. The game would be tied as late as 55-55 with 4:18 remaining, but LCU never allowed CSM regain the lead. Schneider and Haist each had their first field goal of the game inside the final five minutes and they came as part of a 6-0 LCU run for a 61-55 with 3:04 remaining.
The Lady Chaps, who faced a free-throw shooting discrepancy Friday night, was able to take advantage of the opportunity Saturday. LCU (21/30 from the line in the game) outscored CSM 21-6 from the line. Schneider was 6-for-6 from the line.
LCU had nine blocks in the game, with seven coming from
Kellyn Schneider. She finished the game with 11 rebounds, eight points and seven blocks.
Haley Burton produced 14 points for LCU and was the only player to join Fowler in double figures for LCU. Fowler was 6-of-11 from the field for her 16 points and also had nine rebounds on the defensive end for 11 overall rebounds in the game.
Callie Sandusky provided LCU a solid four minutes off the bench. She produced two steals, two points, a block, an assist and a rebound. Courtney Martin led CSM with 17 points.
The contest was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
STREAKS STILL STANDINGWith LCU losing their opener in a neutral site loss to Colorado Colorado Springs, LCU still has their home win streak, road win streak and conference win streak still intact. LCU has won 17 consecutive home games heading into Saturday, and they will take a 15-game road win streak to San Angelo Monday. The home win streak is the fourth longest active streak amongst NCAA Div. II programs. The road streak enters the season as the longest active streak amongst NCAA Div. II programs. The last home loss was on Jan. 10, 2013 (vs. Oklahoma City) and the last true road loss was on Nov. 16, 2013 (at Tarleton State).
A COOL WINLCU was able to defeat Colorado School of Mines despite a 9/35 (25.7%) shooting performance in the second half and a 30.6% (19/62) shooting clip in the game. The Lady Chaps, who never shot under 40% from the field last season, had their worst shooting performance since shooting 20.9% against Metro State on Nov. 5, 2011. Game-by-game statistical archives go back 11 seasons and the 30.6% shooting mark is the lowest shooting mark in which LCU won.

Hannah Harbin (1-of-5) each had a frustrating night, combining for a 4-of-28 (14.3%) shooting mark.
BLOCKING IT OUTKellyn Schneider produced seven blocks in the LCU victory over Colorado School of Mines. It was the most by a Lady Chap over the prior 11 seasons that archived game-by-game statistics have been kept on file, and it was one away from the program record of eight set by Suzanne Copeland on Feb. 12, 1991.
MILE HIGH PERFORMANCEHaley Burton had a solid weekend last week in Colorado. She scored a career high 29 points, which included seven three-pointers, against Colorado Colorado Springs to help her eclipse 1,000 career points in her LCU career. The seven three-pointers tied a program single-game record and she became the fourth player to complete the task in program history. Burton is now one of two players on the Lady Chaps roster with 1,000 career points (
Nicole Hampton, 1,273 points). She enters Saturday's play with 167 career three-pointers and five away from matching former teammate
Emily Pool for fifth on the program's all-time career list.
DOUBLE DOUBLE TROUBLELCU has had a double-double produced in each of their first two games this season.
Tess Bruffey became the first LCU player under
Steve Gomez's coaching reign to record a double-double in her LCU debut, as she produced 16 points and 10 rebounds against Colorado Colorado Springs.
Haley Fowler notched her first double-double against Colorado School of Mines with a career high 16 points and a career best 11 rebounds.
HOME OPENERSThe Lady Chaps have won their home openers the prior two seasons. Their last home opening loss was a 61-44 loss to Metro State on Nov. 5, 2011. LCU is 10-1 all-time in home openers under
Steve Gomez.
CHARITY STRIPE SUCCESSPrior to making the move to NCAA Division II, LCU was in the top-10 in the NAIA in free-throw shooting for eight consecutive seasons: 12/13 (1st), 11/12 (1st), 10/11 (9th), 09/10 (5th), 08/09 (2nd), 07/08 (1st), 06/07 (6th) and 05/06 (9th). Last season, LCU led the conference with a 78.1% shooting mark from the free-throw line, which ranked fifth in NCAA Division II. Hoppel set the program's single season free-throw shooting mark last season at 93.8%. It broke
Nicole Hampton's mark of 92.4% from the 2011-2012 season.
ABOUT MACUThe Lady Evangels are 4-1 this season and will classify Saturday's game as an exhibition game (regular season for LCU). The NAIA member is a former conference foe in the Sooner Athletic Conference. They opened the season 4-0, but fell 65-54 at Bethany College in their first road game of the season. They are led by Alexia Kelley, who is averaging 14.4 points and 11 rebounds a game. She hit the 20-point mark twice this season.
THE SERIES AGAINST MACULCU is 10-1 all-time against Mid-America Christian, with the lone loss coming in a 76-68 overtime loss on Dec. 2, 2010. The most previous meeting resulted in a 71-57 win by LCU in Oklahoma City (Jan. 31, 2013). The prior meeting in Lubbock was on Jan. 12, 2013, with LCU winning 86-52.

Emily Atkins notched 22 points and
Nicole Hampton registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, as No.1 Lubbock Christian University defeated Mid-America Christian University 71-57 Thursday night in Sooner Athletic Conference play inside Gaulke Activity Center.
LCU, coming off their single-best shooting mark in program history Saturday (64%) opened the first half of play shooting just 36.4% from the field. LCU had to use several runs in the first half, as MACU kept answering LCU's punch. LCU led 11-4 lead four minutes into play, but the Lady Evangels came back to tie the game at 13-13 midway through the half. The Lady Chaps then used a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 22-13, but MACU managed to even out the game at 25-25 with 5:09 remaining in the half. MACU was unable to answer a responding 8-0 run by LCU to take a 37-27 halftime lead. Atkins was able to score 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead LCU. The Lady Chaps were 6-of-12 (50%) from three-point range in the first half, but they were just 6-of-21 inside the arc (28.6%).
Emilie Schirmer would hit a three-point field goal for the Lady Evangels to begin the second half of play. LCU would then use an 18-4 run to reach the largest lead of the game at 59-36 at the 7:19 mark. With 2:13 remaining in regulation, the Lady Evangels used a 10-2 run to end the contest cutting the LCU advantage to 71-57. LCU shot 55.6% (15/27) from the field in the second half.
Four Lady Chaps scored in double digits, as Courtney Wilson produced 14 points and
Kelsey Hoppel tallied 12 points to join Atkins and. The starting five for LCU scored 69 out of 71 of their points.
Callie Sandusky made the only field goal of the bench for LCU. Wilson notched a career high with four blocks. Two Lady Evangels would reach double digit scoring as Kourtni Williams had 19 points and Kelsey Dutton had 10 points of the bench.
