Hinson pitched just one season at Lubbock Christian, but made it count, leading the pitching staff of the team that captured LCU's first-ever NAIA National Championship in 1983.

The LaMarque, Texas native, spent his first two collegiate seasons at the University of Texas, where he was used sparingly on the mound, despite a 4-0 record.

As a junior at LCU, however, Hinson won his first nine decisions on the way to a 16-5 overall record, including a 4-2, extra-inning win against his former Longhorn team. Two of those wins also came at the NAIA World series, beating Kansas-Newman 13-3 and Lewis-Clark State 4-3. His 16 wins in a single season are still tied for the most by an LCU pitcher in a single season and he holds the single-season record for innings pitched at 155.2.

In his tie on the mound, Hinson allowed 91 runs, 68 of which were earned on 156 hits. He walked just 69 batters while striking out 123 and posting an earned run average of 3.93 for the year.

After the season, Hinson was selected in the fifth round (112th pick) of the Major League Baseball draft by the Seattle Mariners, which is still the highest spot any Chap has ever been taken. Hinson pitched well as Class AA Wausau in the Midwest League in 1984, but in his first start at Salinas in the California League he was struck on the head by a line drive. He was rushed to the hospital and put in intensive care, which he fought through, but he never played professional baseball again.

Hinson came back to LCU to serve as the Chap pitching coach (1989-90) while completing his degree in secondary education.
