A native of Portales, New Mexico, where he lettered in basketball, baseball and tennis and was named Mr. PHS as a senior, Self originally attended Eastern New Mexico after graduating high school in 1977. 

He attended ENMU for two years before coming to Lubbock Christian as a junior in the fall of 1979. He served as the men's basketball team manager for the 79-80 season and then played for the Chap cagers during the 80-81 season. As a senior that year, Self saw limited action, hitting 11 of 24 field goals and12 of 18 free throws with 15 rebounds, six steals and two blocked shots. He was chosen as LCC's Athlete of the Week for his part in a 73-71 overtime victory against Eastern New Mexico. Self also lettered in tennis that year, although LCU's men's tennis program has since disbanded. 

After finishing his playing career, Self stayed with the Chaps as an Assistant Coach to John Copeland while he completed his degree. He then went on to coach for many years at the high school ranks in the South Plains, mainly at Monterey H.S., where he coached boys basketball for more than 20 years. 

In two decades as the head  coach of the Plainsmen, Self compiled a 416-237 record, four district titles and 13 playoff appearances. He resigned from coaching basketball in 2008, but continued to coach boy's golf at Monterey until retiring in 2011.

Self is now back at Lubbock Christian, having joined the women's basketball coaching staff as Steve Gomez's assistant in August of 2011. He has helped lead the Lady Chaps to a numerous conference championships as well as a pair of NCAA Division II National Titles (2016, 2019).
