Sherrard attended Lubbock Christian when it was still a junior college, playing basketball for the "Pioneers" in the team's second and third season of existence.Â
Statistics for the two seasons are not known, but the team went 6-12 in 1958-59 before improving to 12-11 in Sherrard's sophomore season under new head coach Les Perrin.Â
Jay's son, Bobby, followed in his father's footsteps and attended LCU for both his bachelor's and master's degrees. Bobby was eventually named the head baseball coach of the Chaps, compiling an 86-44 record in two seasons.Â
