Janice (Wilkey) Stephenson was a founding member of the Lubbock Christian volleyball program in 1978, playing for four years under head coach Larry Rogers. An excellent attacking player, Stephenson was the first star of the Lady Chap volleyball team.

Often referred to by her nickname "Yogi," Stephenson racked up 1,604 kills in her career, which is still the fourth-most of any player in LCU history. Her 281 solo blocks are still the most ever recorded by a Lady Chap.

A California native, Stephenson was a multi-sport star in high school, making the First Team All-League in softball, an All-State basketball player and even valedictorian of her class. Her athletic prowess carried over to the collegiate level easily, as she was named the team's Outstanding Freshman.

As a junior in 1980, Stephenson really stepped up her performance, making the All-District VIII Team as the Co-Most Valuable Player of the district. The 1980 season was also great for the Lubbock Christian volleyball program, as the Lady Chaps claimed their first-ever berth in the District VIII Tournament and went undefeated, claiming the Championship to advance to the Bi-District round before seeing their season come to an end.

Before her senior year, she married LCC baseball player Lewis Stephenson, who also had a stellar career on the diamond for the Chaps. Janice capped off her career on the court with 490 kills as a senior, which set a new Lady Chap single-season record and is still the sixth most by a LCU player in one season. The performance helped her repeat as the District VIII Most Valuable Player, although the Lady Chaps were unable repeat as District champions.

Stephenson was inducted into the LCU Athletic Hall of Honor in 1993.
