Hall of Honor
Kyle Smith ran track and cross-country for Lubbock Christian under fellow Hall of Honor inductee Hugh Rhodes from 1978 to 1982.Â
Smith was the school record-holder in the 1500-meter for six years and was an important part of two different cross-country teams that finished as District VIII runners-up in his freshman and senior years.Â
A graduate of MacArthur High School in Irving, Smith was the mile and cross-country champion of District 9-4A before he came to Lubbock Christian. In his first year, the Chap long distance team finished as the District VIII runner-up, just short of repeating as district champions.Â
Smith had perhaps his biggest moment as an LCC athlete that spring, as he set a new Chap record in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:00.5. The record was surpassed in 1985 by John Ruiz and has since been set many more times.Â
He was a pre-med major while at Lubbock Christian and then went on to graduate from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at Scott and White. In 2009, Smith founded Integrity Digital Solutions, which is a software company providing electronic medical records for ophthalmologists.
Smith was inducted into the LCU Athletic Hall of Honor in 1998.Â
