A Lubbock native and graduate of Monterrey High School, Curry Blackwell was one of the most prolific scorers in Chaparral basketball history and was one of the first LCU players to use the three-point line as a major advantage.

When Blackwell ended his career with the Chaps after the 1988-89 season, he held the career record for points scored (1,599) and three-point field goal percentage (46.6), while ranking second in field goal attempts (1070) and free-throw attempts (314). Although his career scoring record has since been passed by three other players, his three-point shooting mark does still stand, and his 17.6 points per game scoring average for a career is the fourth-highest in school history.

Playing for coach John Copeland, Blackwell did not see much playing time, going 11-29 from the field with 34 points, eight rebounds and six steals. He became a full-time player in his sophomore season, however, which was, coincidentally, the first season that the NAIA adopted the three-point line for all games. Blackwell took advantage, hitting 67 shots from behind the newly-painted arc on 50 percent shooting, but he wasn't just a sharpshooter. The Lubbock native led the team with 205 made field goals, averaging 20.2 points per game, which still stands as the second-best single-season mark in school history. He set his single-game career-high during that year with 41 points against McMurry on 2/27/87.

Blackwell didn't score as much as a junior, although he once again hit exactly 67 three-pointers, but he did increase his steals (to 63) and his assists (to 83). He boosted the scoring average back up in his senior season with an average of 19.2 points per game with 5.1 rebounds per game while once again upping his assist totals.

During each of his final three seasons Blackwell was named an All-District VIII selection and a District VIII scholar-athlete. He was twice named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete and became the school's fifth NAIA All-American (Honorable Mention) in his senior season.

Blackwell was inducted in the Hall of Honor in 1996.
