Bowe attended Lubbock Christian College in the day when it was still a junior college from 1959 to 1961, and was inducted into the Hall of Honor for his prowess on the track team under longtime LCC coach and educator Hugh Rhodes, although he competed for the basketball team as well. 

In 1960 he helped lead the Chaps  to a sixth-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic15282 Association National Championships in Big Spring, Texas with a team total of 34 points. Bowe, along with teammates Rusty Childs, Larry Gould, Jim Robbins and Chuck Ramsey finished first in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:29.7. Bowe, Robbins, Childs and Roy Hinkle also captured the title in the 440-yard (400-meter) relay as well with a time of 3:22.1. 

Lubbock Christian improved its standing the following year with a fifth place finish at the NJCAA National Championships and a total of 42 points. Bowe's sprint medley team came in second that year with a time of 3:32.0, just two seconds behind winner Coffeyville. Bowles, Hinkle, Childs and Lockhart did capture the mile relay title, however, with a time of 3:16.7. 

Bowe went on to run track at Texas Tech from 1962 to 1964 before becoming a high school coach in the west Texas area before coming back to LCU to be a professor in the kineseology department. He was inducted into the LCU Athletic Hall of Honor in 1994.
