Hall of Honor
Jeff Brush only played for two seasons at Lubbock Christian, but he left his name all over the record books.
A transfer from Clarendon Junior college, Brush played his junior and senior seasons with the Chaps, averaging 17.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while setting new block records for the program that still stand today.Â
Brush came close to breaking the single-season Chap block record as a junior, swatting away 75 shots, which was five short of Kevin Wharton's record of 80, set in the 1979-80 season. He averaged 18.3 points and 8.6 rebounds that year and racked up 74 assists. He was named the District VIII Most Valuable Player and just the second All-American (Honorable Mention) in program history.Â
As the cherry on top of the incredible season, Lubbock Christian captured the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship after the regular season. In the first round of the postseason, they beat host Austin College even though they trailed by 12 with five minutes left and by five with just 58 seconds to play. Then in the championship game against McMurry Brush was the hero, hitting a bucket at the buzzer in overtime for a 58-56 LCC win.
The Chaps advance to the District VIII tournament (for just the second time in school history) as the No. 5 seed, facing the No. 4 seed Dallas Baptist on the road. The Indians, as DBU was known then, won 81-77, despite the Chaps leading in field goals made (31-30) and rebounds (46-31). The only major category Dallas Baptist led in was free throws, which was 38-19 in their favor.Â
Brush was able to set the school's new single-season during the 1983-84 season - a record that still stands - with 81 on the year. His scoring total did not drop off much at just 17.1 points per game, but his assist total was more than cut in half with just 31.Â
In 1999, Brush was inducted into the Lubbock Christian Athletic Hall of Honor.Â
